Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2014 ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 39 BY SENATOR GARY SMITH A RESOLUTION To commend and congratulate Brandon Oubre of Norco, a junior at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, on being named a Goldwater Scholar. WHEREAS, the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater, who served his country for fifty-six years as a soldier and statesman, including thirty years of service in the United States Senate; and WHEREAS, the purpose of the program is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields; and WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation awarded two hundred eighty scholarships for the 2014-2015 academic year to undergraduate sophomores and juniors from the United States; and WHEREAS, Goldwater Scholarships are widely considered one of the most prestigious undergraduate awards available to students of the sciences; and WHEREAS, recipients of the Goldwater Scholarships were selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of one thousand one hundred seven mathematics, science, and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide; and WHEREAS, Brandon Oubre is one of two LSU students recognized by the Goldwater Foundation and awarded the prestigious, nationally competitive Goldwater Scholarship by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program; and WHEREAS, he is a pursuing a double major in computer science in the College of Engineering and mathematics in the College of Science, currently works in LSU's Robotics Research Lab on the creation of a low-cost robot, and is also working on a collaboration between Microsoft and LSU to develop a geometry tutoring web application system; and SR NO. 39 ENROLLED Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, Brando Oubre plans to obtain a PhD in computer science and is interested in conducting research on robotics for an academic or government organization; and WHEREAS, Brandon Oubre merits the utmost respect for the exemplary strides he has taken in his pursuit of academic excellence, and for the tremendous honor and pride that he brings to his family, friends, community, and the state of Louisiana. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate Brandon Oubre of Norco on being named as a Goldwater Scholar and being awarded a scholarship in the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Brandon Oubre. PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE
