Neil Granger, PhD, and his research team upon receipt of clinical designation as a new Center for Cardiovascular Disease and Sciences at LSU Health Sciences Center Shreveport. A RESOLUTION1 To commend and congratulate D. Neil Granger, PhD, and his research team at the Louisiana2 State University Health Sciences Center Shreveport upon receipt of the extraordinary3 clinical designation as a new Center for Cardiovascular Disease and Sciences4 rendered by the Louisiana Board of Regents.5 WHEREAS, Dr. Neil Granger and his staff are to be congratulated for their6 outstanding advancements made in the field of cardiovascular medicine; and 7 WHEREAS, Dr. Granger is a Boyd Professor and the head of the Department of8 Molecular and Cellular Physiology; he holds a bachelor of science degree in microbiology9 and a doctorate in physiology and biophysics; he assumed his present position as department10 head at LSU Health Sciences Center, where he has also served as the Associate Dean for11 Research, and he has authored more than five hundred articles in peer-review journals,12 books, and other publications; and13 WHEREAS, Dr. Granger along with fifty clinical professionals and faculty support14 research, education, and clinical care at the center, and this designation will help to realize15 the full potential of LSU Health Sciences Center Shreveport as a regional and national center16 for cardiovascular specialization; and 17 WHEREAS, the Center for Cardiovascular Disease and Sciences provides a clinical18 SR NO. 41 SLS 14RS-2005 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 3 setting where patients have unparalleled access to leading experts in treatment, surgery, and1 laboratory analysis; and2 WHEREAS, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States,3 accounting for a 33.6% mortality rate nationwide, and Louisiana ranks fourth highest in the4 nation for heart disease mortality; and5 WHEREAS, one in three Americans are affected by either hypertension, coronary6 artery disease, congestive heart failure, physiological heart defects, or stroke; and7 WHEREAS, in the last decade, LSU Health Sciences Center Shreveport has8 embarked upon an unprecedented period of growth and recognition, and as a result, state9 leaders have coined the phrase, "the Shreveport model", in praise of the level of excellence10 achieved in clinical care and research; and11 WHEREAS, since 2003, LSU Health Sciences Center Shreveport has supported12 research through the Malcolm Feist Cardiovascular Endowment that promotes growth and13 enhanced quality of research, medical education, and patient care; and 14 WHEREAS, through the formation of multi-disciplinary teams, the Center for15 Cardiovascular Disease and Science encourages translational research that transcends basic16 science and clinical research to medical practice, while also leveraging new discoveries into17 commercialization and economic development; and18 WHEREAS, the Center for Cardiovascular Disease and Science reduces the impact19 of cardiovascular disease and enhances patient care and prognosis through cutting-edge20 treatment for those afflicted with especially complex disorders of the heart, brain, and21 peripheral circulatory system.22 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana23 does hereby commend and congratulate D.
