Commends Sue Turner on being selected to receive the George Rodrigue Lifetime Cultural Achievement Award. A RESOLUTION1 To commend and congratulate Sue Turner on being selected to receive the George Rodrigue2 Lifetime Cultural Achievement Award at the 2014 Louisiana Culture Awards and3 to recognize her many achievements and contributions.4 WHEREAS, Suzanne "Sue" Turner is a philanthropist and community activist who5 has worked extensively to preserve historical sites and the arts; and6 WHEREAS, she is the matriarch and member of the senior executive management7 board of Turner Industries, founded by her late husband, Bert Turner, which serves the8 petrochemical, chemical, refining, energy, power generation, and pulp and paper industries,9 among others, providing a single vendor solution in heavy industrial construction,10 maintenance, pipe, module and vessel fabrication, equipment, rigging, and heavy hauling,11 and associated specialty services for nearly fifty years; and 12 WHEREAS, Mrs. Turner has also devoted her time as a member of the boards of13 several entities, including the Louisiana State Museum, BREC Foundation, Baton Rouge14 Green, and Junior Achievement of Greater Baton Rouge; and15 WHEREAS, a native of Plaquemine, Louisiana, Sue Wilbert Turner earned her16 bachelor's degree in arts and sciences from LSU in 1947, and since that time, has devoted17 herself to her children and multiple causes and organizations, positively impacting Baton18 SR NO. 73 SLS 14RS-2733 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 2 Rouge and the state of Louisiana as a whole; and1 WHEREAS, Mrs. Turner's contributions have garnered high praise from various2 agencies, many of which have sought her guidance and direction, and she has repeatedly3 been recognized for her efforts, including receiving the National Association of County4 Parks and Recreation's Outstanding Contributor Award in 2010 for her efforts and5 contributions to save BREC's Magnolia Mound Plantation from demolition; and6 WHEREAS, she has also devoted herself as a trustee for the National Trust for7 Historical Preservation of which she was a founding member with Winnie Byrd, was the8 founding member of the Louisiana Association of Museums, and was a founding member,9 with Bert, of the Pennington Council of 100; and10 WHEREAS, an LSU Foundation Laureate Society member, Mrs. Turner has served11 her alma mater as a board member of the LSU Foundation Board of Directors and the LSU12 Rural Life Museum; she was on the Forever LSU Art Museum Campaign Committee; and13 she is a trustee emeritus for the LSU Museum of Art; and 14 WHEREAS, Mrs. Turner and her late husband, Bert, have five children, John, Mary,15 Robert, Suzanne, and Thomas; and16 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Culture Awards are presented annually by the lieutenant17 governor and the office of cultural development to honor excellence in Louisiana culture,18 and the 2014 program will be held on April 22, 2014. 19 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana20 does hereby commend and congratulate Sue Turner on being selected to receive the George21 Rodrigue Lifetime Cultural Achievement Award at the 2014 Louisiana Culture Awards and22 recognize her many achievements and contributions.23 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Sue24 Turner.25 The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no part of the legislative instrument, were prepared by Jerry J.
