SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 79

SENATE. Commends Southern University and recognizes Monday, April 28, 2014, as
Southern University Day at the Capitol.
A RESOLUTION1
To commend Southern University and to recognize Monday, April 28, 2014, as Southern2
University Day at the Louisiana State Capitol.3
WHEREAS, Southern University is celebrating its one hundred thirty-fourth year of4
excellence in higher education; and5
WHEREAS, in 1880, the university began in New Orleans with twelve students, five6
faculty members, and a ten thousand dollar budget, and the university was relocated to Baton7
Rouge in 1914; and8
WHEREAS, the Southern University System has risen to become one of the9
country's premier historically black institutions, offering numerous degree programs ranging10
from certificates to doctorates; and11
WHEREAS, the Southern University System has a statewide presence with campuses12
in Baton Rouge, consisting of the main campus, the Law Center, and the Agricultural13
Research and Extension Center; New Orleans; and Shreveport; and14
WHEREAS, the Southern University System holds the distinction of being the15
nation's only historically black 1890 land grant university system; and16
WHEREAS, the system boasts more than one hundred thousand graduates, and17
Southern's alumni have gone on to make significant contributions to their chosen professions18 SR NO. 79

throughout the state, nation, and world; and1
WHEREAS, Southern University merits a special measure of recognition upon the2
celebration of its exemplary education tradition that now spans one hundred thirty-four3
years. 4
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana5
does hereby recognize and record for posterity the pride and honor that Southern University6
brings to the state of Louisiana, does hereby express sincere appreciation for its singular7
legacy of excellence, does hereby recognize Monday, April 28, 2014, as Southern University8
Day at the Louisiana State Capitol, and does hereby extend to the entire Southern family best9
wishes upon this memorable day.10
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the11
president of the Southern University System.12
