SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 81

SENATE. Designates Wednesday April 23, 2014, as Union Bethel AME Church Day.
A RESOLUTION1
To designate Wednesday, April 23, 2014, as Union Bethel AME Church Day in the2
Louisiana Senate.3
WHEREAS, the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church was founded4
by Richard Allen in 1787 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as a connectional church;5
and6
WHEREAS, Episcopal refers to the form of government under which the7
church operates, having Bishops serve as the chief executive and administrative8
officers of the African Methodist Episcopal denomination; and9
WHEREAS, the roots of the AME are of the family of Methodist churches,10
which provides an orderly system of rules and regulations and places emphasis on11
a plain and simple gospel; and12
WHEREAS, the word African means that the church was organized in13
America by people of African heritage, to be inclusive of all person regardless of14
decent; and15
WHEREAS, the AME church has more than one million members scattered16
across the United States, Canada, South America, West Africa, South Africa, and the17

WHEREAS, the Union Bethel AME Church of Amelia, Louisiana, St. Mary1
Parish, was organized in 1865 and the church structure was rebuilt at its current2
location in 1902; and3
WHEREAS, the Union Bethel AME Church is located within the boundaries4
of the Eighth Episcopal District of the AME Church and within the5
Alexandria-Thibodaux Presiding Elder District.6
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Louisiana State Senate does7
hereby recognize Wednesday, April 23, 2014, as Union Bethel AME Church of8
Amelia, Louisiana Day in the Louisiana Senate.9
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that copies of this Resolution be transmitted10
to the Right Reverend Julius Harrison McAllister, Sr., Presiding Bishop of the Eighth11
Episcopal District, and Reverend Lloyd Washington, Presiding Elder of the12
Alexandria-Thibodaux District.13
