Harry Lazarus Jr. on being awarded the French Legion of Merit medal by the Sons of the American Revolution. A RESOLUTION1 To commend Lieutenant Colonel Harry Lazarus Jr. on being awarded the French Legion of2 Merit medal by the Sons of the American Revolution.3 WHEREAS, the French Legion of Merit medal was introduced in July, 1804, and is4 recognized as the first modern order of merit; and5 WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Harry Lazarus Jr. was awarded the medal in a6 ceremony at a meeting of the Galvez chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution in7 Shreveport, Louisiana; and8 WHEREAS, it was bestowed to him by the Honorary Consul of France, Dana Krees;9 and10 WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Lazarus served in the 75 th Infantry Division of the United States11 Army in 1944, arriving in France to take part in the Battle of the Bulge; and12 WHEREAS, he slept in houses, barns, and foxholes to protect himself from frigid13 temperatures and snowstorms; and14 WHEREAS, his valiant and courageous service contributed to the liberation of15 France during World War II as a member of the 291 st Infantry Regiment, and Lt. Col.16 Lazarus participated in the entire campaign of his regiment, particularly to the Bastille de17 la Poche Colmar and the assault through the Foret Domaniale on February 3, 1945; and18 SR NO. 9 SLS 14RS-641 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, at a young age, Lt. Col. Lazarus sacrificed to liberate France and1 Europe; and2 WHEREAS, his achievements and distinction make him worthy of emulation and3 public recognition; and4 WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Harry Lazarus Jr. merits recognition for the deep5 sense of pride he has brought to all who served alongside him and to those he touched with6 his extraordinary honesty, integrity, and love of country; and7 WHEREAS, the success of the state of Louisiana, the strength of our communities,8 and the overall vitality of American society depend in great measure upon citizens like9 Lieutenant Colonel Harry Lazarus Jr. who bring tremendous pride and honor to their family,10 friends, community, state, and nation.11 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana12 does hereby commend and congratulate Lieutenant Colonel Harry Lazarus Jr. on his13 selection as a recipient of the distinguished French Legion of Merit medal.14 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to15 Lieutenant Colonel Harry Lazarus Jr.16 The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no part of the legislative instrument, were prepared by Nancy Vicknair.
