Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2014 ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 9 BY SENATOR PEACOCK A RESOLUTION To commend Lieutenant Colonel Harry Lazarus Jr. on being awarded the French Legion of Merit medal by the Sons of the American Revolution. WHEREAS, the French Legion of Merit medal was introduced in July 1804 and is recognized as the first modern order of merit; and WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Harry Lazarus Jr. was awarded the medal in a ceremony at a meeting of the Galvez chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution in Shreveport, Louisiana; and WHEREAS, it was bestowed to him by the Honorary Consul of France, Dana Krees; and WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Lazarus served in the 75 th Infantry Division of the United States Army in 1944, arriving in France to take part in the Battle of the Bulge; and WHEREAS, he slept in houses, barns, and foxholes to protect himself from frigid temperatures and snowstorms; and WHEREAS, his valiant and courageous service contributed to the liberation of France during World War II as a member of the 291 st Infantry Regiment, and Lt. Col. Lazarus participated in the entire campaign of his regiment, particularly to the Bastille de la Poche Colmar and the assault through the Foret Domaniale on February 3, 1945; and WHEREAS, at a young age, Lt. Col. Lazarus sacrificed to liberate France and Europe; and WHEREAS, his achievements and distinction make him worthy of emulation and public recognition; and WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel Harry Lazarus Jr. merits recognition for the deep sense of pride he has brought to all who served alongside him and to those he touched with his extraordinary honesty, integrity, and love of country; and SR NO. 9 ENROLLED Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, the success of the state of Louisiana, the strength of our communities, and the overall vitality of American society depend in great measure upon citizens like Lieutenant Colonel Harry Lazarus Jr. who bring tremendous pride and honor to their family, friends, community, state, and nation. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate Lieutenant Colonel Harry Lazarus Jr. on his selection as a recipient of the distinguished French Legion of Merit medal. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Lieutenant Colonel Harry Lazarus Jr. PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE
