FISHING/CRABS: Expands eligibility for a commercial crab trap gear license to holders
of a seafood dealer's license who can document appropriate crab landings
1 AN ACT
2To amend and reenact R.S. 56:305.6(B), relative to commercial crab trap gear licenses; to
3 authorize certain wholesale/retail dealers to purchase a commercial crab trap gear
4 license; and to provide for related matters.
5Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
6 Section 1. R.S. 56:305.6(B) is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows:
7 §305.6. Commercial crab fishing; apprentice license; requirements

9 B. Beginning November 15, 2014, and applicable to license year 2015 and
10 thereafter, no person shall be issued a commercial crab trap gear license unless that
11 person qualifies under one or both of the following provisions:
12 (1) The person possessed a valid commercial crab trap gear license during
13 any two license years between 2011 and 2014.
14 (2) The person possessed a valid wholesale/retail seafood dealer's license and
15 can demonstrate crab landings through trip ticket submissions during any two years
16 between 2011 and 2014.
17 (3) The person has enrolled in and completed the program to increase and
18 elevate professionalism in the commercial crab industry established pursuant to the
19 provisions of this Section.

Abstract: Authorizes seafood dealer's license holders to be eligible to purchase commercial
crab trap gear licenses.
Present law restricts the purchase of commercial crab gear licenses to those who either held
such licenses during any two license years between 2011 and 2014 or to people who have
completed the program for the development of professionalism in the crab industry.
Proposed law adds another eligible group of people – people who held a wholesale/retail
seafood dealer's license and can document crab landings during any two years between 2011
and 2014.
