HB 50 Original 2015 Regular Session	Danahay
Abstract: Amends a statutory reference in supplemental pay provisions for firefighters so
that it refers to a provision applicable to firefighters rather than to one applicable to
police officers.
Present law requires the state to pay $300 per month, in addition to the compensation paid
by the local employer or other specified employers, to most full-time firefighters and police
officers who have completed one year of service.
Present law provides that a reduction of the salary of any firefighter or police officer is void
where it is made solely by reason of state supplemental pay. Present law authorizes
employers to enhance the first year salary of firefighters and police officers in an amount up
to the state supplemental pay amount. Provides that the reduction of the employees salary
after the first year by the amount of the enhancement is not void pursuant to present law
relative to salary reductions.
Present law is structured such that provisions applicable to firefighters and provisions
applicable to police officers are in separate but parallel statutes. Provisions applicable to
firefighters contain a reference to a statute in the police officer provisions. Proposed law
changes the statutory reference so that it refers to the equivalent provision within the
firefighter provisions. Otherwise, present law is retained.
Effective upon signature of governor or lapse of time for gubernatorial action.
(Amends R.S. 40:1666.1(A)(3)(c))
