HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 119

COMMENDATIONS:  Commends citizens who serve as jurors and designates May 11
through May 15, 2015, as Jury Appreciation Week in the state of Louisiana
1	A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
2To commend citizens who devote their time to serve as jurors and to designate the week of
3 May 11 through May 15, 2015, as Jury Appreciation Week in the state of Louisiana.
4 WHEREAS, the right to a trial by jury is one of the core values of American
5citizenship; and
6 WHEREAS, the obligation and privilege to serve as a juror are as fundamental to our
7democracy as the right vote; and
8 WHEREAS, courts depend upon citizens to serve as jurors, and service by citizens
9as jurors is indispensable to the judicial system; and
10 WHEREAS, all citizens should be encouraged to respond when summoned for jury
11service; and
12 WHEREAS, a continuing and imperative goal for the courts, the Louisiana State Bar
13Association, and our communities is to ensure that jury selection and jury service are fair,
14effective, and not unduly burdensome; and
15 WHEREAS, one of the most significant actions a court system can take is to show
16appreciation for the many citizens who devote their time and talents to serve on juries; and
17 WHEREAS, the Legislature of Louisiana is committed to the following goals:
18educating the public about jury duty and the importance of jury service, ensuring that the
19responsibility of jury service is shared fairly among citizens, ensuring that all jurors are
20treated with the utmost respect and that their service is not unduly burdensome, providing
21jurors with necessary tools to assist them with their decision making, and continuing to

1improve the jury system by encouraging productive dialogue between jurors and court
2officials; and
3 WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend the important contributions of citizens who
4devote their time and effort in serving as jurors and to designate the week of May 11 through
5May 15, 2015, as Jury Appreciation Week in the state of Louisiana.
6 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
7commend the efforts of all citizens who devote their time to serve as jurors and does hereby
8designate the week of May 11 through May 15, 2015, as Jury Appreciation Week in the state
9of Louisiana.
10 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
11to Jim Harris.
