HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 121
BY REPRESENTATIVE HODGES
INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS:  Expresses the sense of the legislature concerning the right
of Israel to exist and to defend itself
1	A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
2To  express support for the people of Israel and for their right to live in freedom and to
3 defend themselves, to recognize the longstanding friendship between the people of
4 Israel and the people of Louisiana, and to extend best wishes to the people of Israel
5 for peace, security, and prosperity.
6 WHEREAS, the land of Israel was the birthplace of the Jewish people, where their
7spiritual, religious, and national identity was formed, where they achieved independence,
8and where they have created a culture of national and universal significance; and
9 WHEREAS, Israel is the foremost leader in the Middle East and a shining example
10for the rest of the world relative to the recognition of the basic equality and dignity of
11women, providing full and equal opportunities for women to vote, hold elected office, own
12property, and pursue and engage in any occupation, profession, or trade; and
13 WHEREAS, the people of the United States, including the citizens of Louisiana, have
14long experienced a close and mutually beneficial relationship with Israel and her people,
15share strong economic ties, and each year enjoy the traditions of trade, foreign investment,
16and job creation as a result of doing business with Israel; and
17 WHEREAS, since its establishment on May 14, 1948, Israel has had to defend
18herself and her right to exist; the people of Israel have been persecuted throughout history,
19and there are still those who express a desire for the destruction of Israel; and
20 WHEREAS, Israel faces continued threats to her safety and security today; and

1 WHEREAS, efforts by Iran to acquire nuclear weapons are a direct threat to Israel's
2right to exist and, consistent with Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, which
3recognizes the right of a country to self-defense, Israel must be allowed to take necessary
4actions to remove threats to her existence and to protect the lives and safety of her people.
5 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
6express support for the people of Israel and for their right to live in freedom and to defend
7themselves; does hereby recognize the longstanding friendship between the people of Israel
8and the people of Louisiana; and does hereby extend to the people of Israel best wishes for
9peace, security, and prosperity.
10 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
11to the Ambassador of Israel to the United States.
