HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 131
BY REPRESENTATIVES BROADWATER, HALL, AND HAZEL
A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
To commend Gene Rushing, of Pineville, Louisiana, upon his retirement from Louisiana
College as the men's head basketball coach.
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend Gene Rushing upon his retirement from
Louisiana College, where for more than thirty years, he has been a part of Louisiana College
men's basketball; and
WHEREAS, in 1967, Mr. Rushing began his legacy at Louisiana College as an
outstanding basketball player; he spent two years as a player, eleven years as an assistant
coach, and twenty-nine years as the head coach for the men's basketball team; and
WHEREAS, he had a 335-431 record at Louisiana College including a stretch
between 1987 and 1991, where he had a record of 102-48; he won an NAIA district title and
made an appearance in the NAIA national tournament; with the coaching skills of Mr.
Rushing, Louisiana College moved to NCAA Division III, beginning in the 2001-2002
season; and
WHEREAS, Coach Rushing is recognized as the winningest coach in Louisiana
College's history and his commitment and loyalty to Louisiana College is unmatchable; and
WHEREAS, under Coach Rushing's leadership, every basketball player recruited by
him left Louisiana College with a degree; and
WHEREAS, Coach Rushing has been the epitome of what Louisiana College
represents; he has prepared his players to succeed both on and off the court and has sent
hundreds of young men into the professional world; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of his extraordinary coaching skills, Coach Rushing was
inducted into the Louisiana College Sports Hall of Fame in the fall of 2006; and

WHEREAS, his compassion for young people, basketball, and his drive to succeed
will forever be remembered by his former players, colleagues, and his community; and
WHEREAS, Coach Rushing will always be respected and admired for the wonderful
guidance he gave to his players both on and off the court, as he challenged them to succeed
not only as athletes but as well-rounded human beings, and upon the end of his monumental
coaching career at Louisiana College, Coach Rushing merits a special measure of
commendation for his outstanding accomplishments and his enduring legacy that will long
continue to be a source of tremendous pride for the innumerable players, coworkers, and fans
whose lives he touched during his unforgettable career at Louisiana College.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
commend Gene Rushing upon his retirement as head coach of the Louisiana College men's
basketball team; does hereby express to him sincere appreciation for his exemplary
leadership of Louisiana College's men's basketball program and for the honor he has brought
to the school, community, and the state of Louisiana; and does hereby extend to him every
good wish for success and happiness in all of his future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to Gene Rushing.
