BY REPRESENTATIVE WILLMOTT
SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH:  Recognizes the week of May 6 through 12, 2015, as
National Nurses Week in Louisiana
1	A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
2To recognize the week of May 6 through 12, 2015, as National Nurses Week in Louisiana.
3 WHEREAS, Louisiana's fifty-seven thousand registered nurses and the nearly three
4million one hundred thousand registered nurses in the United States comprise our state's and
5the nation's largest healthcare profession; and
6 WHEREAS, the depth and breadth of the registered nursing profession meets the
7different and emerging healthcare needs of the American population in a wide range of
8settings; and
9 WHEREAS, the Louisiana State Nurses Association, as the voice for the registered
10nurses of this state, is working to chart a new course for a healthy Louisiana that relies on
11increasing delivery of primary and preventive health care; and
12 WHEREAS, a renewed emphasis on primary and preventive health care will require
13the better utilization of all of our nation's registered nursing resources; and
14 WHEREAS, professional nursing is an indispensable component in the safety and
15quality of care of hospitalized patients; and
16 WHEREAS, the demand for registered nursing services is greater than ever due to
17the aging of the American population, the continuing expansion of life-sustaining
18technology, and the rapid pace of growth in home healthcare services; and
19 WHEREAS, more qualified registered nurses will be needed in the future to meet the
20increasingly complex needs of healthcare consumers in all communities of our state; and

1 WHEREAS, the safe, cost-effective healthcare services provided by registered nurses
2are consistently of the highest quality, and will be an ever more important component of the
3United States healthcare delivery system in the future; and
4 WHEREAS, since 1991, National Nurses Week has been celebrated annually from
5May 6, also known as National Recognition Day for Nurses, through May 12, the birthday
6of the founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale; and
7 WHEREAS, National Nurses Week celebrates all of the ways in which registered
8nurses strive to provide safe and high-quality patient care and lead the way to improvements
9in our healthcare system.
10 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
11proclaim May 6 through 12, 2015, to be National Nurses Week in Louisiana.
12 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
13encourage all residents of this state to join together in honoring the registered nurses who
14care for all of us.
15 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
16recognize and commend the notable accomplishments of the registered nursing profession
17and its efforts to improve our healthcare system, and does hereby express sincere
18appreciation for the nation's registered nurses not just during this week, but at every
19opportunity throughout the year.
20 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
21to the executive director of the Louisiana State Nurses Association.
