HLS 15RS-3987 ORIGINAL 2015 Regular Session HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 199 BY REPRESENTATIVE BARROW COMMENDATIONS: Commends LeeDell Woods, Jr., upon his induction into the Southern University Sports Hall of Fame 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2To commend LeeDell Woods, Jr., upon his induction into the Southern University Sports 3 Hall of Fame. 4 WHEREAS, on November 7, 2014, LeeDell Woods, Jr., was inducted into the 5Southern University Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of his talent and star performance 6as a member of the Southern University basketball team; and 7 WHEREAS, a resident of Port Allen, Mr. Woods was a member of the Jaguar 8basketball team from 1972 to 1975; and 9 WHEREAS, Mr. Woods began his sports career at Cohn High School, where he was 10a member of the football team, basketball team, and track team; he was voted most valuable 11player in basketball and most improved player in football; throughout his sports career at 12Cohn High School, Mr. Woods scored over nine hundred points; and 13 WHEREAS, in 1969, Mr. Woods transferred to Port Allen High School where he 14played and lettered in three sports; although he was voted "All District" in all of the sports 15he participated in, he excelled in basketball and received most valuable player while securing 16a spot on the state and district teams; as an exceptional athlete at Port Allen High School, 17he scored eight hundred twenty-eight points; and 18 WHEREAS, upon his high school graduation, Mr. Woods began playing basketball 19at the collegiate level; from 1972 until 1975, he was the leading scorer for the Southern 20University basketball team; and Page 1 of 4 HLS 15RS-3987 ORIGINAL HCR NO. 199 1 WHEREAS, Mr. Woods enjoyed many honors and accolades, including being chosen 2as most valuable player in 1975, most outstanding player from 1974 to 1975, outstanding 3player chosen by the student government in 1973, and outstanding athlete in 1972; and 4 WHEREAS, he graduated from Southern University with a bachelor of science 5degree and a masters degree in recreation administration; and 6 WHEREAS, for twenty-four years, Mr. Woods worked for the West Baton Rouge 7Parish Parks & Recreation Department; and 8 WHEREAS, after his retirement from the West Baton Rouge Parish Parks & 9Recreation Department, he continued a fulfilling career as director of recreation at the 10Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired; and 11 WHEREAS, while working for the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired for 12twenty-five years, Mr. Woods received the coach of the year award and was awarded keys 13to the cities of Port Arthur, Texas, Jackson, Mississippi, and Grand Isle, Louisiana; he also 14had the honor of coaching the only known blind biking team in the nation, and his team of 15blind bikers rode over two thousand five hundred miles, completing their seven planned 16biking trips through five states; and 17 WHEREAS, his work extended to Würzburg, Germany, where he shared successful 18teaching techniques to faculty, staff, and students; while working in Germany, he was made 19an honorary citizen; and 20 WHEREAS, Mr. Woods also served as a certified state instructor and professional 21motor coach trainer for motor coaches and buses, and he has trained over five hundred eighty 22students in the classroom and behind the wheel; and 23 WHEREAS, throughout his twenty-four years of service with West Baton Rouge 24Parish, Mr. Woods served thousands of children, seniors, and adults; and 25 WHEREAS, his passion for sports led him to direct the National Hershey Track and 26Field Program; he was appointed as a national coach and listed in the Hershey Track and 27Field Hall of Fame; and 28 WHEREAS, having a heart for his community, Mr. Woods began several day camps, 29aerobic fitness classes, pool tournaments, and horseshoe tournaments in West Baton Rouge 30Parish; and Page 2 of 4 HLS 15RS-3987 ORIGINAL HCR NO. 199 1 WHEREAS, Mr. Woods was awarded a land and water conservation grant for West 2Baton Rouge Parish to help form various developments such as Joe Myhand Park, Landen 3Alexander Park, Lukeville Park, Tombstone Park, Brusly High School baseball fields and 4tennis courts, Brusly Middle School tennis courts, Rivault Park, and William and Lee Park; 5and 6 WHEREAS, in recognition of his extraordinary community efforts, he was awarded 7honorary citizenship from the cities of Plaquemine and St. Gabriel; and 8 WHEREAS, in addition to his many other outstanding achievements, Mr. Woods 9received the highest awards presented by the Louisiana Recreation and Park Association and 10the National Recreation and Park Association, such as the Fellow Award and Professional 11Citation recognition; he has also served as president of the Louisiana Recreation and Park 12Association and president of the National Recreation and Park Association; and 13 WHEREAS, he is the loving husband of Sadie Payne Woods and the proud father of 14Stacey A. Woods; and 15 WHEREAS, Mr. Woods merits a sincere measure of commendation for his 16distinguished career as a basketball star at Southern University, for the outstanding honor 17of being inducted into the Southern University Sports Hall of Fame, and for his 18extraordinary community service. 19 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 20commend LeeDell Woods, Jr., upon his induction into Southern University Sports Hall of 21Fame; does hereby congratulate Mr. Woods as he celebrates this memorable and historic 22occasion; and does hereby extend to him every good wish for success and happiness in all 23his future endeavors. 24 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted 25to LeeDell Woods, Jr. Page 3 of 4 HLS 15RS-3987 ORIGINAL HCR NO. 199 DIGEST The digest printed below was prepared by House Legislative Services.
