ENROLLED 2015 Regular Session HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 199 BY REPRESENTATIVE BARROW A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION To commend LeeDell Woods, Jr., upon his induction into the Southern University Sports Hall of Fame. WHEREAS, on November 7, 2014, LeeDell Woods, Jr., was inducted into the Southern University Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of his talent and star performance as a member of the Southern University basketball team; and WHEREAS, a resident of Port Allen, Mr. Woods was a member of the Jaguar basketball team from 1972 to 1975; and WHEREAS, Mr. Woods began his sports career at Cohn High School, where he was a member of the football team, basketball team, and track team; he was voted most valuable player in basketball and most improved player in football; throughout his sports career at Cohn High School, Mr. Woods scored over nine hundred points; and WHEREAS, in 1969, Mr. Woods transferred to Port Allen High School where he played and lettered in three sports; although he was voted "All District" in all of the sports he participated in, he excelled in basketball and received most valuable player while securing a spot on the state and district teams; as an exceptional athlete at Port Allen High School, he scored eight hundred twenty-eight points; and WHEREAS, upon his high school graduation, Mr. Woods began playing basketball at the collegiate level; from 1972 until 1975, he was the leading scorer for the Southern University basketball team; and WHEREAS, Mr. Woods enjoyed many honors and accolades, including being chosen as most valuable player in 1975, most outstanding player from 1974 to 1975, outstanding player chosen by the student government in 1973, and outstanding athlete in 1972; and Page 1 of 3 HCR NO. 199 ENROLLED WHEREAS, he graduated from Southern University with a bachelor of science degree and a masters degree in recreation administration; and WHEREAS, for twenty-four years, Mr. Woods worked for the West Baton Rouge Parish Parks & Recreation Department; and WHEREAS, after his retirement from the West Baton Rouge Parish Parks & Recreation Department, he continued a fulfilling career as director of recreation at the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired; and WHEREAS, while working for the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired for twenty-five years, Mr. Woods received the coach of the year award and was awarded keys to the cities of Port Arthur, Texas, Jackson, Mississippi, and Grand Isle, Louisiana; he also had the honor of coaching the only known blind biking team in the nation, and his team of blind bikers rode over two thousand five hundred miles, completing their seven planned biking trips through five states; and WHEREAS, his work extended to Würzburg, Germany, where he shared successful teaching techniques to faculty, staff, and students; while working in Germany, he was made an honorary citizen; and WHEREAS, Mr. Woods also served as a certified state instructor and professional motor coach trainer for motor coaches and buses, and he has trained over five hundred eighty students in the classroom and behind the wheel; and WHEREAS, throughout his twenty-four years of service with West Baton Rouge Parish, Mr. Woods served thousands of children, seniors, and adults; and WHEREAS, his passion for sports led him to direct the National Hershey Track and Field Program; he was appointed as a national coach and listed in the Hershey Track and Field Hall of Fame; and WHEREAS, having a heart for his community, Mr. Woods began several day camps, aerobic fitness classes, pool tournaments, and horseshoe tournaments in West Baton Rouge Parish; and WHEREAS, Mr. Woods was awarded a land and water conservation grant for West Baton Rouge Parish to help form various developments such as Joe Myhand Park, Landen Alexander Park, Lukeville Park, Tombstone Park, Brusly High School baseball fields and Page 2 of 3 HCR NO. 199 ENROLLED tennis courts, Brusly Middle School tennis courts, Rivault Park, and William and Lee Park; and WHEREAS, in recognition of his extraordinary community efforts, he was awarded honorary citizenship from the cities of Plaquemine and St. Gabriel; and WHEREAS, in addition to his many other outstanding achievements, Mr. Woods received the highest awards presented by the Louisiana Recreation and Park Association and the National Recreation and Park Association, such as the Fellow Award and Professional Citation recognition; he has also served as president of the Louisiana Recreation and Park Association and president of the National Recreation and Park Association; and WHEREAS, he is the loving husband of Sadie Payne Woods and the proud father of Stacey A. Woods; and WHEREAS, Mr. Woods merits a sincere measure of commendation for his distinguished career as a basketball star at Southern University, for the outstanding honor of being inducted into the Southern University Sports Hall of Fame, and for his extraordinary community service. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend LeeDell Woods, Jr., upon his induction into Southern University Sports Hall of Fame; does hereby congratulate Mr. Woods as he celebrates this memorable and historic occasion; and does hereby extend to him every good wish for success and happiness in all his future endeavors. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted to LeeDell Woods, Jr. SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE Page 3 of 3
