HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 42
BY REPRESENTATIVE SMITH AND SENATOR DORSEY-COL OMB
COMMENDATIONS:  Commends Chicken Shack of Baton Rouge upon its eightieth year
anniversary
1	A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
2To commend Chicken Shack management and personnel upon the celebration of eighty
3 years of continuous operation.
4 WHEREAS, the original Chicken Shack was founded in 1935 in the front of the
5home of its owner, Thomas H. Delpit, and the back of the small shotgun house was the
6family's living quarters; and
7 WHEREAS, current Chicken Shack owner, Joseph Delpit, was born in the family
8living portion of the building but likes to joke that he was born on Chicken Shack's kitchen
9floor; and
10 WHEREAS, Chicken Shack holds the distinction of being the oldest continually
11operating restaurant in Baton Rouge and has provided sustenance to such notable celebrities
12as James Brown, Sam Cooke, Ike and Tina Turner, Buddy Guy, and Percy Sledge; and
13 WHEREAS, in 1953, Chicken Shack played a role in the civil rights movement by
14serving as a meeting place for the organizers of the Baton Rouge bus boycott; in addition,
15Martin Luther King, III, a Mississippi Indian chief, and an African king have patronized the
16establishment, and it is appropriate to recognize the business and civic contributions made
17to the Baton Rouge Community in the eighty years of business of Chicken Shack.
18 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
19commend the management team of Chicken Shack for perpetuating the historical icon across
20eighty years of continuous operation and does hereby extend best wishes for continued
21success and prosperity in the years to come.
