CONDOLENCES:  Expresses condolences upon the death of Colonel Gene C. Hazel
1	A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
2To express the condolences of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the death of Colonel Gene
3 C. Hazel of Shreveport.
4 WHEREAS, with the death of Colonel Gene C. Hazel on Thursday, March 26, 2015,
5Louisiana has lost one of her finest sons; and
6 WHEREAS, Gene C. Hazel was born on February 25, 1930; he had a passion for
7football and played football for the Red Wolves, formerly known as the Indians; he
8graduated from Arkansas State University and his enthusiasm for sports continued after he
9completed his formal education; and
10 WHEREAS, Gene C. Hazel had an exemplary military career; he honorably served
11his country for thirty-three years in the Army National Guard; and
12 WHEREAS, he fought in the Korean War and earned numerous medals and
13commendations for his service to his country and retired from the Army National Guard with
14the rank of Colonel; and
15 WHEREAS, Colonel Gene C. Hazel was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting
16and playing golf; he served as a former president of the Louisiana Wild Turkey Federation,
17and he was a faithful Christian man who loved his family and his church; and
18 WHEREAS, Colonel Gene C. Hazel is survived by his loving wife of thirty years,
19Mary Roberts Hazel; his sons, George Stephen Hazel, Gene Jeffrey Hazel, Robert Mark
20Hazel and his wife Fran, and the Honorable Lowell Christopher Hazel and his wife Karen;
21his daughter, Charlotte Louise Hazel Jenkins and her husband Charles; his stepchildren,

1Stephen Howard Rugg and his wife Pat, and Susan Rugg Austin and her husband David; and
2numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and
3 WHEREAS, although the death of Colonel Gene C. Hazel has left a tremendous void
4in the state, his legacy shall forever remain in the minds and hearts of all who knew and
5loved this extraordinary man.
6 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
7express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Colonel Gene C. Hazel of
8Shreveport and does hereby recognize that his death has created a great sense of sorrow in
9the citizens whose lives he touched, all of whom mourn the loss of this brave and faithful
10man who served Louisiana and the United States of America.
11 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
12to the family of Colonel Gene C. Hazel.
