HLS 15RS-1858 ORIGINAL 2015 Regular Session HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 83 BY REPRESENTATIVES LEGER, ARNOLD, LEOPOLD, AND MORENO AND SENATORS APPEL, MURRAY, AND PETERSON SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH: Designates Wednesday, April 29, 2015, as New Orleans Day at the legislature 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2To designate Wednesday, April 29, 2015, as New Orleans Day at the Louisiana Legislature, 3 to commend the city of New Orleans, and to provide suitable observance of this 4 special day. 5 WHEREAS, Louisiana is nationally and internationally recognized as perhaps the 6most unique state in the nation because of its amazing variety of major natural and cultural 7attractions and significant historical sites, and New Orleans plays a vital role in the 8distinction that Louisiana enjoys; and 9 WHEREAS, New Orleans, founded in 1718, integrates into its identity two hundred 10ninety-seven years of rich history, and is worthy of recognition for serving as a gateway to 11one of America's most unusual states with a diverse cultural heritage and singular historical 12legacy; and 13 WHEREAS, the city of New Orleans ranks as the eighth most popular travel 14destination in the nation, drawing visitors from all over the world; and 15 WHEREAS, the legislature celebrates the world prominence of the city of New 16Orleans as home to one of America's largest ports and most affordable airports; and 17 WHEREAS, the legislature celebrates Louis Armstrong New Orleans International 18Airport, which is setting new records for passengers served, and recognizes its key role in 19bolstering the city's economy; and Page 1 of 3 HLS 15RS-1858 ORIGINAL HCR NO. 83 1 WHEREAS, New Orleans, while celebrating its extraordinary history, is also a 2dynamic and modern city and is home to diverse industries including tourism, aerospace, oil 3and gas, shipbuilding, manufacturing, telecommunications, film, music, the visual, 4performing, and design arts, financial institutions; and facilities for scientific and medical 5research; and 6 WHEREAS, through such diverse economic activity, the city of New Orleans 7generates a substantial amount of tax dollars for the state treasury; and 8 WHEREAS, more than nine million people visit the city annually, contributing to its 9economic prosperity, to patronize celebrated restaurants, elegant hotels, fabulous retail 10shops, and a wealth of entertainment venues; and 11 WHEREAS, New Orleans' great festivals attract visitors, including almost one-half 12million for Jazz Fest, over one-half million for French Quarter Fest, and nearly one million 13for Mardi Gras; and 14 WHEREAS, New Orleans offers a bevy of cultural treasures, such as the National 15WWII Museum, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Contemporary Arts Center, the New 16Orleans Jazz Orchestra, Audubon Nature Institute, and the world-renowned musicians and 17entertainers that call New Orleans home; and 18 WHEREAS, New Orleans proudly offers countless galleries for international and 19local art clustered in and around the French Quarter and the nearby Warehouse District, and 20a beautiful venue for the performing arts and Broadway musicals at the recently remodeled 21Saenger Theatre; and 22 WHEREAS, it is the people of many cultural backgrounds that have contributed to 23the wonderful mixture of sights, sounds, smells, and tastes that makes New Orleans the 24remarkably distinctive place it is today. 25 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 26designate Wednesday, April 29, 2015, as New Orleans Day at the Louisiana Legislature and 27does hereby commend the city of New Orleans and provides that this special day shall be 28observed with appropriate recognition of the unique history and culture of the Crescent City.
