HLS 15RS-238 ORIGINAL 2015 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 12 BY REPRESENTATIVE BARROW SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH: Recognizes Tuesday, May 19, 2015, as the thirty-first annual Red and White Day at the Louisiana Legislature 1 A RESOLUTION 2To recognize Tuesday, May 19, 2015, as the thirty-first annual Red and White Day at the 3 Louisiana Legislature. 4 WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, 5for its outstanding achievements and generous community service for one hundred two years 6and to recognize Tuesday, May 19, 2015, as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated's Red 7and White Day at the Louisiana Legislature; and 8 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Social Action Committee of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, 9Incorporated, would like to acknowledge the vision of Red and White Day at the Louisiana 10Legislature that began in 1985 and has resulted in Red and White Day growing from a 11Louisiana tradition, to one observed by many of the sorority's thousands of chapters 12throughout the country and held annually at the nation's capital in Washington D.C.; and 13 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded on January 13, 1913, by 14twenty-two collegiate women at Howard University who were eager to use their collective 15strength to promote academic excellence, to provide scholarships and support to those in 16need, to educate and stimulate participation in the establishment of positive public policy, 17and to highlight issues and find solutions to problems in their communities; and 18 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority exercises its collective strength to promote 19academic excellence and to provide assistance to the community; and Page 1 of 3 HLS 15RS-238 ORIGINAL HR NO. 12 1 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was incorporated in 1930 and is a private, 2nonprofit organization that provides assistance and support through established programs 3in local communities and throughout the world; and 4 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, is the largest African 5American Greek letter sorority, a sisterhood of more than two hundred thousand 6predominately African American college educated women, comprised of more than nine 7hundred chapters located in the United States, England, Japan, Germany, the Virgin Islands, 8Bermuda, Haiti, the Bahamas, and the Republic of Korea; and 9 WHEREAS, the members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, stand on the 10shoulders of giants such as former state representatives Renee Gill Pratt, Rosalind Peychaud, 11Jalila Jefferson Bullock, and the late Pinkie Carolyn Wilkerson, Senator Karen Carter 12Peterson, and former state senators Diana E. Bajoie and Cheryl Gray Evans who have left 13an incredible imprint on this state's history; and 14 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, uses its Five-Point Program; 15Thrust of Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and 16Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement to 17uplift, encourage, and develop the global community; and 18 WHEREAS, the organizational structure and governance of Delta Sigma Theta 19Sorority, Incorporated, is invested in the Grand Chapter, which meets at a biennial national 20convention, and regional conferences are held in the seven geographic regions of the 21organization during nonconvention years; and 22 WHEREAS, the success of the public service programs of Delta Sigma Theta 23Sorority, Incorporated, has depended upon its commitment to community service and 24academic achievement as well as its quest for excellence in all endeavors. 25 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the 26Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Tuesday, May 19, 2015, as Delta Sigma 27Theta Sorority, Incorporated's thirty-first annual Red and White Day at the Louisiana 28Legislature; does hereby commend the women of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, 29for their exceptional achievements and manifold contributions; and does hereby extend 30enduring appreciation to the organization and its members for the tremendous pride and Page 2 of 3 HLS 15RS-238 ORIGINAL HR NO. 12 1honor that they bring to their local communities, the state of Louisiana, and the United States 2of America. 3 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted 4to the president of the Grand Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, and to 5the regional director for the Southwest Region of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
