HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 140

COMMENDATIONS:  Commends the Gamma Eta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority, Incorporated, upon the celebration of its seventy-fifth anniversary and
designates June 3, 2015, as Gamma Eta Omega Day at the state capitol
1	A RESOLUTION
2To commend the Gamma Eta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated,
3 upon the celebration of its seventy-fifth anniversary, and to designate Wednesday,
4 June 3, 2015, as Gamma Eta Omega Day at the state capitol.
5 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, was established in 1908 at
6Howard University in Washington, D.C., and was the first Greek letter organization founded
7for African American college women; and
8 WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, is a sorority of more than
9two hundred eighty thousand members representing nine hundred eighty chapters in the
10United States, the United States Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, and several foreign countries;
11and
12 WHEREAS, the Gamma Eta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
13Incorporated, is celebrating its seventy-fifth anniversary of service to the greater Baton
14Rouge community; and
15 WHEREAS, Gamma Eta Omega was the first Baton Rouge graduate chapter of
16Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, chartered on May 28, 1940; and
17 WHEREAS, the Gamma Eta Omega chapter has implemented international programs
18that promote education, health, strong families, economic empowerment, and the arts; and

1 WHEREAS, the Gamma Eta Omega chapter has programs that have provided
2invaluable services to the Baton Rouge community over the years, including Arts Camp for
3Kids, Leadership Fellows Institute, Emerging Young Leaders Academy, and the ASCEND
4program, all of which focus on building future leaders; and
5 WHEREAS, the Gamma Eta Omega chapter has provided opportunities for education
6through yearly scholarships given to both local high school and college students to promote
7the necessity of higher education; and
8 WHEREAS, the Gamma Eta Omega chapter has contributed resources to
9organizations such as St Vincent de Paul, Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of America,
10the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, Southern University, and Louisiana State University,
11enriching the lives of local citizens; and
12 WHEREAS, the Gamma Eta Omega chapter is made up of exceptional local women
13who exhibit strength, leadership, and self-determination and who have dedicated their
14energies and talents to their community.
15 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
16Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and express enduring appreciation to the
17members of the Gamma Eta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated,
18for the tremendous honor and pride they bring to their families, friends, the greater Baton
19Rouge community, the state, and the nation; and does hereby designate Wednesday, June 3,
202015, as Gamma Eta Omega Day at the state capitol.
21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
22to the Gamma Eta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
