HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 140
BY REPRESENTATIVE HONORE
A RESOLUTION
To commend the Gamma Eta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated,
upon the celebration of its seventy-fifth anniversary, and to designate Wednesday,
June 3, 2015, as Gamma Eta Omega Day at the state capitol.
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, was established in 1908 at
Howard University in Washington, D.C., and was the first Greek letter organization founded
for African American college women; and
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, is a sorority of more than
two hundred eighty thousand members representing nine hundred eighty chapters in the
United States, the United States Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, and several foreign countries;
and
WHEREAS, the Gamma Eta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
Incorporated, is celebrating its seventy-fifth anniversary of service to the greater Baton
Rouge community; and
WHEREAS, Gamma Eta Omega was the first Baton Rouge graduate chapter of
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, chartered on May 28, 1940; and
WHEREAS, the Gamma Eta Omega chapter has implemented international programs
that promote education, health, strong families, economic empowerment, and the arts; and
WHEREAS, the Gamma Eta Omega chapter has programs that have provided
invaluable services to the Baton Rouge community over the years, including Arts Camp for
Kids, Leadership Fellows Institute, Emerging Young Leaders Academy, and the ASCEND
program, all of which focus on building future leaders; and
WHEREAS, the Gamma Eta Omega chapter has provided opportunities for education
through yearly scholarships given to both local high school and college students to promote
the necessity of higher education; and

WHEREAS, the Gamma Eta Omega chapter has contributed resources to
organizations such as St Vincent de Paul, Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of America,
the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, Southern University, and Louisiana State University,
enriching the lives of local citizens; and
WHEREAS, the Gamma Eta Omega chapter is made up of exceptional local women
who exhibit strength, leadership, and self-determination and who have dedicated their
energies and talents to their community.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and express enduring appreciation to the
members of the Gamma Eta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated,
for the tremendous honor and pride they bring to their families, friends, the greater Baton
Rouge community, the state, and the nation; and does hereby designate Wednesday, June 3,
2015, as Gamma Eta Omega Day at the state capitol.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to the Gamma Eta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
