COMMENDATIONS: Commends Francis Melancon, Jr., the oldest African American
licensed horse trainer in the United States
1 A RESOLUTION
2To commend Francis Melancon, Jr., the oldest African American licensed horse trainer in
3 the United States.
4 WHEREAS, Francis Melancon, Jr., has spent more than sixty of his eighty years of
5life training horses; he still makes his way most mornings to barn Q at Evangeline Downs
6Training Center in Carencro; and
7 WHEREAS, Mr. Melancon holds the distinction of being the oldest African
8American licensed horse trainer in the United States; he enjoys his "kids", as he calls the
9horses he works with, and fondly recalls the name of the first horse he trained, Sassy Bee;
10and
11 WHEREAS, the citizens of Louisiana are proud of the longevity Francis Melancon,
12Jr., has displayed in his horse training career; Mr. Melancon deserves special merit for
13attaining the singular honor of being the oldest African American licensed horse trainer in
14the United States.
15 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
16Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Francis Melancon, Jr., upon becoming the
17oldest African American licensed horse trainer in the United States; does hereby offer
18Mr. Melancon sincere and hearty congratulations; and does hereby extend best wishes for
19many more years of happiness with his equine friends.
20 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
21to Mr. Francis Melancon, Jr.
