HLS 15RS-234 ORIGINAL 2015 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 3 BY REPRESENTATIVE LEOPOLD SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH: Recognizes Wednesday, April 29, 2015, as Plaquemines Parish Day at the state capitol 1 A RESOLUTION 2To recognize Wednesday, April 29, 2015, as Plaquemines Parish Day at the state capitol. 3 WHEREAS, Plaquemines Parish is home to more than twenty-three thousand 4residents and is the site of many historic events and serves an important role in the oil and 5trade industries; and 6 WHEREAS, Plaquemines Parish is the parish with the most combined land and water 7area in Louisiana and is located along the last seventy miles of the Mississippi River; and 8 WHEREAS, the parish became known as Plaquemines after the French name for 9their military post, "piakimin", which means persimmon, rightfully named because of the 10numerous persimmon trees near the post; and 11 WHEREAS, Plaquemines Parish was the first place in the United States where 12shippers used a container for cargo in foreign trade; and 13 WHEREAS, Fort Jackson is a major historical site in the parish, dating back to 1822 14and built pursuant to a recommendation from General Andrew Jackson; the fort was used 15during the Civil War and was used as a training base for troops during World War I; and 16 WHEREAS, Woodland Plantation, an antebellum mansion in Plaquemines Parish, 17serves as a bed and breakfast and is depicted on the label for Southern Comfort whiskey; and 18 WHEREAS, Plaquemines Parish has significant seafood and citrus industries and is 19the largest crude oil producing parish in Louisiana; the parish is also home to Plaquemines 20Port, one of the largest ports in the United States; and Page 1 of 2 HLS 15RS-234 ORIGINAL HR NO. 3 1 WHEREAS, while the parish may be prone to flooding because of its location along 2the Mississippi River, its people remain resilient and loyal. 3 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the 4Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Wednesday, April 29, 2015, as Plaquemines 5Parish Day at the state capitol. 6 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted 7to Amos Cormier, Jr., president of Plaquemines Parish.
