SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH: Recognizes Wednesday April 22, 2015, as Southern
University Day at the state capitol
1 A RESOLUTION
2To recognize Wednesday April 22, 2015, as Southern University Day at the state capitol.
3 WHEREAS, Southern University is celebrating its one hundred thirty-fifth year of
4excellence in higher education; and
5 WHEREAS, in 1880, the university began in New Orleans with twelve students, five
6faculty members, and a ten thousand dollar budget; in 1914, the university was relocated to
7Baton Rouge; and
8 WHEREAS, the Southern University System has risen to include some of the
9country's premier historically black institutions, offering numerous degree programs ranging
10from certificates to doctorates; and
11 WHEREAS, the Southern University System has a statewide presence with campuses
12in Baton Rouge, consisting of the main campus, the Law Center, and the Agricultural
13Research and Extension Center; New Orleans; and Shreveport; and
14 WHEREAS, the Southern University System holds the distinction of being the
15nation's only historically black 1890 land grant university system; and
16 WHEREAS, the system boasts more than one hundred thousand graduates, and
17Southern University's alumni have made significant contributions to their chosen professions
18throughout the state, nation, and world; and
19 WHEREAS, Southern University merits a special measure of recognition upon the
20celebration of its exemplary education tradition that now spans one hundred thirty-five years.

1 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
2Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Wednesday, April 22, 2015, as Southern
3University Day at the state capitol; does hereby recognize and record for posterity the pride
4and honor that Southern University brings to the state of Louisiana; does hereby express
5sincere appreciation for its singular legacy of excellence; and does hereby extend to the
6entire Southern University family best wishes on this memorable day.
7 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
8to the president of the Southern University System.
