A RESOLUTION
To commend former state representative Herbert B. Dixon, Sr., for his many years of
dedicated and distinguished public service to Rapides Parish and the state of
Louisiana.
WHEREAS, a native of Rapides Parish, Herbert B. Dixon, Sr., is the loving husband
to Janet Hartwell Dixon and the proud father of five children: Herbert, Jr., Temika, Clayton,
Rydell, and Britanny; and
WHEREAS, in 1967, Mr. Dixon graduated from Peabody High School in
Alexandria, Louisiana and earned a bachelor of science degree from Southern University in
1971; and
WHEREAS, as an honorable sailor in the United States Navy, bravely serving from
1972 through 1978, Mr. Dixon earned a Yeoman Class "A" Certificate in San Diego,
California; and
WHEREAS, upon ending his military career, Mr. Dixon began to study at George
Washington University in Washington, D.C, and would later earn a master of education
degree from Southern University in 1975, and further earn thirty hours above a master's
degree from Northwestern State University; and

WHEREAS, after completing his formal education, Mr. Dixon continued his
commitment to education by becoming a teacher at Bolton High School in Alexandria,
Louisiana, where he taught social studies; and
WHEREAS, in 1980, Mr. Dixon became the staff representative for the Louisiana
Federation of Teachers because of its mission to champion fairness, democracy, economic
opportunity, and high-quality public education, healthcare and public services for students
and their families through community engagement, organization, collective bargaining, and
political activism; and
WHEREAS, in November 1992, Mr. Dixon was elected to the Rapides Parish School
Board where he served as a member for fifteen years and consistently demonstrated a
dedicated spirit and an intense determination to improve the quality of public school
education in Rapides Parish; and
WHEREAS, in 2007, Representative Dixon was elected to the Louisiana House of
Representatives as the representative for House District No. 26, where he served his
constituents with integrity and commitment, always keeping their interests as the driving
force behind his decisions; and
WHEREAS, as a member of the Louisiana Legislature, Representative Dixon
introduced legislation that focused on improving the lives of all people, including legislation
to establish a state minimum wage, to offer protection of public school teachers and other
employees from physical abuse by students, and to combat dating violence in schools; and 
WHEREAS, during his distinguished tenure at the Louisiana House of
Representatives, Representative Dixon served on the House committees on commerce;
education; house and governmental affairs; transportation, highways, and public works; and
as chairman of the House Committee on Labor and Industrial Relations; and 
WHEREAS, Representative Dixon was also an active member of the Louisiana
Legislative Black Caucus, the Louisiana Democratic Caucus, and the Louisiana Rural
Caucus; and
WHEREAS, in addition to his tremendous and unwavering public service to
education and government in our state, Mr. Dixon has been actively involved in his
community throughout his life and is affiliated with many organizations including Alpha Phi
Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Cenla's Best, Rapides Democratic Executive Committee, Warhorse

Tailgate Association, Inc., Southern University Alumni Association, the D.A. Anderson
Scholarship Committee and Zion Hill Church, where he worships as well as leads a
governmental affairs educational outreach program that educates young church members
about government; and
WHEREAS, after ending his service as state representative, Mr. Dixon is entering
a new phase of public service and continuing his work as a lifelong advocate for the
improvement of lives and accessibility to quality education by joining the Louisiana
Workforce Commission as its Outreach Director; and
WHEREAS, as Outreach Director, Mr. Dixon will work with local Workforce
Investment Boards and community partners to connect individuals who live in disadvantaged
areas of the state with quality jobs; and
WHEREAS, Herbert Dixon is revered as an individual of strong character with a
steadfast commitment to service which constructed an unwavering legacy of leadership in
the central Louisiana area which he continues today.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Herbert B. Dixon, Sr., for his stellar career
in education and government and his faithful commitment to the people of central Louisiana
and does hereby extend to Mr. Dixon best wishes as he embarks upon new challenges and
endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to Mr. Herbert B. Dixon, Sr.
