HLS 15RS-1908 ORIGINAL 2015 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 48 BY REPRESENTATIVE HODGES CONDOLENCES: Expresses condolences upon the deaths of thousands as a result of an earthquake in Nepal 1 A RESOLUTION 2To express the condolences of the House of Representatives upon the deaths of thousands 3 in the devastation of a massive earthquake in Nepal. 4 WHEREAS, on Saturday, April 25, 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the area 5between the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu, and the city of Pokhara, with tremors felt across 6the region extending into India, Bangladesh, Tibet, and on Mount Everest; and 7 WHEREAS, as of Monday, April 27, 2015, the horrifying death toll attributed to the 8earthquake has exceeded four thousand one hundred persons, with tens of thousands more 9shell-shocked, homeless, and sleeping in the streets; and 10 WHEREAS, the geographical area of Nepal is similar in size to Louisiana, and the 11citizens of Nepal provided much-needed assistance to the citizens of Louisiana in the wake 12of the devastation of 2005 that was Hurricane Katrina; and 13 WHEREAS, the U.S. State Department has knowledge of nine United States citizens 14traveling in Tibet, including Louisiana natives Jan Quiett, Rudi Miksa, and Susan Miksa of 15Monroe, and M. Douglas Walton of Ruston, who are part of a group of eleven American, 16four Canadian, and three Nepalese artists visiting the area as part of "Journey Encounter 17Nepal and Tibet"; and 18 WHEREAS, Nepal and areas impacted by the earthquake are at this very moment 19experiencing dark hours and the tragic loss of life similar to that experienced by citizens of 20Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina; it is with great sadness that the members of the Page 1 of 2 HLS 15RS-1908 ORIGINAL HR NO. 48 1House of Representatives mourn the lives lost, yet with ever-present hope, stand ready to aid 2and assist our sister state of Nepal in any way possible. 3 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the 4Legislature of Louisiana does hereby extend deepest sympathies to the relatives and friends 5of those who died in the Nepal earthquake; does hereby share in the hope of rescue, peace, 6and comfort for those who remain; and does hereby stand ready to offer help within our 7power to do so. 8 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted 9to the government of Nepal.
