HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 48
BY REPRESENTATIVE HODGES
A RESOLUTION
To express the condolences of the House of Representatives upon the deaths of thousands
in the devastation of a massive earthquake in Nepal.
WHEREAS, on Saturday, April 25, 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the area
between the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu, and the city of Pokhara, with tremors felt across
the region extending into India, Bangladesh, Tibet, and on Mount Everest; and
WHEREAS, as of Monday, April 27, 2015, the horrifying death toll attributed to the
earthquake has exceeded four thousand one hundred persons, with tens of thousands more
shell-shocked, homeless, and sleeping in the streets; and
WHEREAS, the geographical area of Nepal is similar in size to Louisiana, and the
citizens of Nepal provided much-needed assistance to the citizens of Louisiana in the wake
of the devastation of 2005 that was Hurricane Katrina; and
WHEREAS, the U.S. State Department has knowledge of nine United States citizens
traveling in Tibet, including Louisiana natives Jan Quiett, Rudi Miksa, and Susan Miksa of
Monroe, and M. Douglas Walton of Ruston, who are part of a group of eleven American,
four Canadian, and three Nepalese artists visiting the area as part of "Journey Encounter
Nepal and Tibet"; and
WHEREAS, Nepal and areas impacted by the earthquake are at this very moment
experiencing dark hours and the tragic loss of life similar to that experienced by citizens of
Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina; it is with great sadness that the members of the
House of Representatives mourn the lives lost, yet with ever-present hope, stand ready to aid
and assist our sister state of Nepal in any way possible.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby extend deepest sympathies to the relatives and friends
of those who died in the Nepal earthquake; does hereby share in the hope of rescue, peace,
and comfort for those who remain; and does hereby stand ready to offer help within our
power to do so.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to the government of Nepal.
