HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 61

CONDOLENCES:  Expresses condolences upon the death of William Thomas "Bill" Bailey
1	A RESOLUTION
2To express the condolences of the Louisiana House of Representatives upon the death of
3 William Thomas Bailey of Athens, Louisiana.
4 WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the Louisiana House of
5Representatives has learned of the death of William Thomas Bailey on October 20, 2014,
6at the age of eighty-one; and
7 WHEREAS, he was a lifelong resident of Claiborne Parish; he graduated from
8Athens High School and Louisiana Tech University; while at Louisiana Tech, Mr. Bailey
9was a member of the basketball team and a member of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society; and
10 WHEREAS, Mr. Bailey obtained a masters degree in mathematics and administration
11at Mississippi State University; and
12 WHEREAS, he began his teaching and coaching career at Summerfield High School;
13he eventually became the principal at Summerfield High School and guided the community
14to excellence in academics, extracurricular activities, and athletics; and
15 WHEREAS, in the late 1960s, Mr. Bailey led Summerfield through the desegregation
16process; and
17 WHEREAS, he served as the superintendent of schools in Claiborne Parish, and upon
18his retirement as superintendent, he returned to his position as principal of Summerfield
19High School and later served as the assistant principal for Athens High School and director
20of Louisiana Technical College Vocational School in Homer; and

1 WHEREAS, Mr. Bailey was also an active member in his community; he served as
2a director at Homer National Bank, a board member of Presbyterian Village of Homer, a
3board member of the Coordinating and Development Council of North Louisiana, and he
4was a member of Athens Presbyterian Church, the Louisiana Cattlemen's Association, and
5the Retired Principals and Superintendents Associations of Louisiana; and
6 WHEREAS, Mr. Bailey had a passion for the outdoors, and he enjoyed hunting and
7fishing with his friends and family; and
8 WHEREAS, with the death of William Thomas Bailey, Louisiana has lost one of her
9finest citizens, and his memory shall forever remain in the minds and hearts of all who knew
10and loved this extraordinary man.
11 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the
12Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express its sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the
13death of William Thomas Bailey and does hereby express enduring appreciation for the pride
14and honor he will forever bring to his family, friends, community, and the state of Louisiana.
15 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
16to the family of William Thomas Bailey.
