ENROLLED 2015 Regular Session HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 71 BY REPRESENTATIVE JAMES A RESOLUTION To commend Cox Communications for its efforts in bridging the digital divide for low- income families in communities throughout the state of Louisiana through its Connect2Compete Internet-adoption program. WHEREAS, approximately eighty percent of teachers assign online homework to students; less than half of low-income kindergarten through twelfth grade students have broadband at home, compared to more than ninety percent of higher-income families; and WHEREAS, students who have access to a computer and broadband at home have a significantly higher graduation rate than students without access to computers and broadband; and WHEREAS, thirty percent of Americans face the risk of becoming isolated because of their lack of necessary internet skills and internet service; and WHEREAS, students without broadband and digital skills are faced with obstacles in the classroom and in the job market; and WHEREAS, more than eighty percent of Fortune 500 companies require online job applications and fifty percent of jobs in today's job market require technology skills; and WHEREAS, Cox Communications, through its Connect2Compete Internet-adoption program, has provided low-income families in Louisiana with the necessary tools to succeed in today's world. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Cox Communications for its efforts in bridging the digital divide for low-income families in communities through its Connect2Compete Internet-adoption program.
