RÉSUMÉ DIGEST Act 267 (SB 178) 2015 Regular Session Amedee Prior law defined "meat broker" as any person, firm or corporation engaged in the business of buying or selling carcasses, parts of carcasses, meat, or meat food products of cattle, sheep, poultry, swine, goats, horses, mules or other equines on commission, or otherwise negotiating purchases or sales of such articles other than for his own account or as an employee of another person, firm or corporation. New law expands the definition of "meat broker" to include a person, firm or corporation engaged in the business of buying or selling carcasses, parts of carcasses, meat, or meat food products of cattle, sheep, poultry, swine, goats, horses, mules or other equines conducting transactions and otherwise retains prior law. New law defines "intervening transfer or storage" as no longer in possession of meat products. Prior law (R.S. 3:4215) provided for exemptions to inspection requirements for the slaughter of animals and the preparation of carcasses. New law clarifies that retail type establishments are exempt from inspections in certain circumstances. New law additionally exempts meat and meat food products sold and transported directly to the consumer by a retail store, restaurant, or similar retail type establishment's employees or a common carrier without intervening transfer or storage from the inspection requirements.
