COMMENDATIONS. Designates March 28, 2015, as Prader-Willi Syndrome Day in
Lousiana in honor of Cooper McReynolds.
1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
2 To designate March 28, 2015, as "Prader-Willi Syndrome Day" in Louisiana in honor of
3 Cooper McReynolds.
4 WHEREAS, Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is a genetic disorder which is congenital
5 and affects an estimated one in thirty thousand people worldwide; and
6 WHEREAS, Cooper McReynolds was diagnosed with PWS, of which there are
7 currently an average of thirty children in Louisiana with PWS; and
8 WHEREAS, people with this rare disease typically have mild to moderate intellectual
9 impairment, learning disabilities, and behavioral problems requiring physical, occupational
10 and speech therapies; and
11 WHEREAS, beginning in childhood, affected individuals develop an insatiable
12 appetite, which leads to chronic overeating and obesity which often results in type two
13 diabetes; and
14 WHEREAS, most affected individuals are deemed infertile and although inherited,
15 the disease is a result of genetic changes that occur as random events during the formation
16 of reproductive cells or in early embryonic development; and
17 WHEREAS, Cooper McReynolds is a beacon of light and a champion for spreading
18 awareness of this rare disease as he exhibits great hope and courage while coping with the

1 daily struggles inflicted by this disease.
2 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
3 designate March 28, 2015, as "Prader-Willi Syndrome Day" in Louisiana in honor of Cooper
4 McReynolds and the efforts of his family in bringing awareness of this dreaded rare disease
5 to citizens of our state.
6 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
7 Cooper McReynolds.
