SLS 15RS-2848 ORIGINAL 2015 Regular Session SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 121 BY SENATORS GARY SMITH AND BROWN AND REPRESENTATIVES GAINES, MILLER AND WILLMOTT COMMENDATIONS. Commends former Destrehan High School football player Ed Reed on his outstanding high school, college, and professional career and congratulates him on the occasion of his retirement from the NFL. 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2 To commend Ed Reed on his outstanding high school, college, and professional career and 3 congratulate him on the occasion of his retirement from the National Football 4 League. 5 WHEREAS, Ed Reed attended Destrehan High School in St. Rose, Louisiana, where 6 he played the position of defensive safety for the Wildcats; and 7 WHEREAS, he was an all-state selection at defensive back and as a kick returner, 8 and named Most Valuable Defensive Player in his district by the New Orleans Times- 9 Picayune; and 10 WHEREAS, Mr. Reed totaled eighty-three tackles, seven interceptions, three forced 11 fumbles, and twelve deflected passes during his senior year while also seeing action as a 12 running back and quarterback; and 13 WHEREAS, in addition to football, he was also a member of the Wildcats basketball, 14 baseball, and track and field squads; and 15 WHEREAS, a standout track athlete, Mr. Reed was a member of the state champion 16 4 x 100 meters relay squad, set a high school record throw of 56.94 meters in the javelin, and 17 recorded a personal-best leap of 7.20 meters in the long jump; and 18 WHEREAS, he was recruited by the University of Miami in 1997 and was a member Page 1 of 3 SCR NO. 121 SLS 15RS-2848 ORIGINAL 1 of the football squad that won the 2001 Bowl Championship Series national championship 2 game in his senior year; and 3 WHEREAS, during his time with the Hurricanes, Mr. Reed was a two-time All- 4 American in 2000 and 2001; and 5 WHEREAS, he holds the record for career interceptions with twenty-one career 6 interception return yards at three hundred eighty-nine, and interceptions returned for 7 touchdowns at five; and 8 WHEREAS, Mr. Reed was awarded the Big East Defensive Player of the Year award 9 in 2001 and led the nation with nine interceptions and three touchdowns to set a new school 10 record; and 11 WHEREAS, he was also a Big East Champion in the javelin throw as a member of 12 the University of Miami Hurricanes' track and field team; and 13 WHEREAS, Mr. Reed was selected in the first round of the 2002 National Football 14 League (NFL) draft by the Baltimore Ravens and played ten seasons with that organization 15 before signing with the Houston Texans in 2013 and later with the New York Jets; and 16 WHEREAS, during his professional career, he was selected to the Pro Bowl nine 17 times and was an All-Pro selection eight times; and 18 WHEREAS, Mr. Reed was a member of the Baltimore Ravens in 2012 when the 19 team was the American Football Conference Champion and ultimately won Super Bowl 20 XLVII with a 34-31 win over the San Francisco 49ers; and 21 WHEREAS, his records in the National Football League include longest interception 22 returned for a touchdown, and he was the first person in NFL history to return an 23 interception, punt, blocked punt, and fumble for a touchdown; and 24 WHEREAS, Mr. Reed was named Consensus All-American two times, established 25 a NFL record for the longest interception return of one hundred eight yards, and is the 26 Baltimore Ravens all-time career leader in interceptions; and 27 WHEREAS, Mr. Reed's distinguished career in athletics has brought much honor and 28 recognition to the state of Louisiana and he is most deserving of public commendations and 29 congratulations on such a successful and illustrious athletic career. 30 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby Page 2 of 3 SCR NO. 121 SLS 15RS-2848 ORIGINAL 1 commend and congratulate Ed Reed on his outstanding high school, college, and 2 professional career and congratulates him on the occasion of his retirement from the 3 National Football League, does hereby extend a special measure of commendation for his 4 outstanding accomplishments and his enduring legacy that will forever continue to be a 5 source of tremendous pride for the citizens of Louisiana, and extends to him best wishes for 6 continued success in all of his future endeavors. 7 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Ed 8 Reed.
