Expresses sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Louis Charles Bartus. 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2 To express the sincere and heartfelt condolences of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the 3 death of Louis Charles Bartus. 4 WHEREAS, it is with great sadness that the citizens and the Legislature of Louisiana 5 have learned of the death of Louis Charles Bartus on October 23, 2014, at the age of 6 eighty-eight; and 7 WHEREAS, he was born on June 16, 1926, to the Reverend Alexander and Goldie 8 (Aranka) Szekely Bartus in the Hungarian community located in Albany, Louisiana; and 9 WHEREAS, Louis attended the Hungarian Elementary School and graduated from 10 Albany High School in 1943; and 11 WHEREAS, upon graduation he proudly served his community, state, and country 12 by enlisting in the United States Navy and serving during World War II; and 13 WHEREAS, after his years of military service he returned home and continued his 14 education at Southeastern Louisiana University (SLU) where he earned a degree in science 15 education and a master's degree in administration and supervision; always a huge and 16 faithful fan of his alma mater, he served as president of the Southeastern Louisiana 17 University Alumni Association from 1969-1971 and as president of the Livingston Parish 18 Chapter Southeastern Louisiana University Alumni Association; and Page 1 of 3 SCR NO. 26 SLS 15RS-153 ORIGINAL 1 WHEREAS, he taught and coached at various schools throughout Livingston and 2 Tangipahoa parishes, he served as principal at Maurepas High School and Holden High 3 School retiring from the Louisiana Department of Education in the late 1970s, and continued 4 his love of education by serving as principal of Valley Forge Academy in Amite, Louisiana; 5 and 6 WHEREAS, he was also a training facilitator at Exxon Chemical in Baton Rouge, 7 Louisiana, employed by the Louisiana office of emergency preparedness, and worked for the 8 Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality for a number of years before deciding to 9 retire from his professional careers; and 10 WHEREAS, Louis Bartus was an exemplary and highly-admired citizen of Louisiana 11 who worked tirelessly on a multitude of business, civic, political, and religious causes 12 throughout his life; and 13 WHEREAS, he was the town clerk, a member of the board of aldermen and mayor 14 of Albany in the 1960s, and he was instrumental in bringing the AT&T Telephone Exchange 15 to the Village of Albany; he was also a member of Amvets Post 68, American Legion Post 16 258, and Albany Masonic Lodge #466, and was one of the original founders of Port 17 Manchac; and 18 WHEREAS, Mr. Bartus was an active member of the Albany Presbyterian Church 19 and Albany Hungarian Presbyterian Church serving as elder, choir member, Sunday school 20 teacher, and church treasurer; and 21 WHEREAS, Louis Charles Bartus was very proud of his Hungarian heritage and was 22 always a stellar part of the Hungarian Settlement, and he finally fulfilled his lifelong dream 23 of opening the Louis Bartus Hungarian Sausage and Pastries business where people from 24 various states visited his shop to buy Hungarian sausage that he so lovingly made and always 25 served with information on his beloved Hungarian culture; and 26 WHEREAS, Louis Bartus is one of the original pioneers who worked towards having 27 the old Hungarian Elementary School building turned into the Hungarian Settlement 28 Historical Museum, which is set to open in late 2015; he was a member and former president 29 of the Hungarian Settlement Historical Society (HSHS) and Arpadhon Hungarian Settlement 30 Cultural Association (AHSCA), and he served on the board of directors for Westminster Page 2 of 3 SCR NO. 26 SLS 15RS-153 ORIGINAL 1 Presbyterian Housing in New Orleans, Hammond, and Albany, and on the board of directors 2 for the Livingston Parish Convention & Visitors Bureau; and 3 WHEREAS, he was a loving, dedicated, and devoted husband to his wife, Pauline 4 Yuhasz Bartus, for sixty-six years, a committed father, cherished grandfather, and 5 great-grandfather whose love of family was of the utmost importance in his life; and 6 WHEREAS, because of his numerous accomplishments in public and private life, 7 the death of Louis Bartus has left a void in his community and the state and has created a 8 genuine sense of profound sorrow in his friends and family; and 9 WHEREAS, the success of the state of Louisiana, the strength of our communities, 10 and the overall vitality of American society depend in great measure upon men like Louis 11 Charles Bartus who led by example and made the world a better place for all future 12 generations, a true Louisiana hero, and an inspiration to all who were fortunate enough to 13 have known him. 14 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana honors the life 15 of Louis Charles Bartus, an extraordinary man who shall forever be remembered, and pays 16 tribute to his remarkable legacy which will live long in the hearts of the many people whose 17 lives he touched. 18 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the members of the Legislature of Louisiana 19 express their sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family of Louis Charles Bartus upon 20 the occasion of his death. 21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the 22 family of Louis Charles Bartus.
