SLS 15RS-581 ORIGINAL 2015 Regular Session SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 48 BY SENATOR ERDEY AND REPRESENTATI VE POPE CONDOLENCES. Expresses condolences upon the death of Norman Alton Leggette. 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2 To express the sincere and heartfelt condolences of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the 3 death of Norman Alton Leggette. 4 WHEREAS, it is with great sadness that the citizens and Legislature of Louisiana has 5 learned of the passing of Alton Leggette, a distinguished gentleman, renowned coach, civic 6 leader, and former member of the Livingston Parish School Board on March 29, 2015, at the 7 age of eighty; and 8 WHEREAS, Norman Alton Leggette was born on December 20, 1935, and raised in 9 Holden, Louisiana, where he attended elementary school through high school and later 10 Southeastern Louisiana University where he majored in physical education, a miraculous 11 feat in itself after being stricken with polio as a young child; and 12 WHEREAS, he began his coaching and teaching career at Maurepas, then spent six 13 years at Holden, his alma mater, and the rest of his career at Denham Springs High School 14 and with the Livingston Parish School Board; and 15 WHEREAS, Coach Leggette coached his high school alma mater to the Class C Boys 16 state championship in 1963, then moved to Denham Springs High School after being heavily 17 recruited as head basketball coach for thirteen seasons and was named part of the inaugural 18 Denham Springs High School Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2011; and Page 1 of 3 SCR NO. 48 SLS 15RS-581 ORIGINAL 1 WHEREAS, he received many accolades during his prestigious career that included 2 District Coach of the Year three times, Parish Coach of the Year four times, and Class C 3 State Coach of the Year in 1963 and was inducted into the Louisiana High School Athletic 4 Association Hall of Fame in 1991; and 5 WHEREAS, throughout his life Alton Leggette was a man of action and his proactive 6 stance made him a positive force at all levels of his life; his athleticism won him free throw 7 shooting competitions, he could shoot with either hand, he was an ace softball pitcher until 8 age thirty-six, and he was a determined athlete and coach which, in turn, made the young 9 men he coached determined not to let him down; and 10 WHEREAS, Alton Leggette was the kind of citizen who represents what is good 11 about Louisiana, a man of wisdom who used his many talents, integrity, and passion for his 12 community, parish, and state to change Louisiana and its citizens for the better; and 13 WHEREAS, with the death of Alton Leggette, the state has lost one of her finest 14 citizens, a true gentleman who left an indelible mark on the many individuals whose lives 15 he touched; and 16 WHEREAS, the death of Alton Leggette has created a tremendous void in his 17 community, but his lessons and his memory shall live forever in the minds and hearts of all 18 who were blessed to have worked with, been coached by, or to just have known him; and 19 WHEREAS, his love of family was of the utmost importance in his life, and he was 20 a caring and devoted husband and best friend to the love of his life, his wife of fifty-nine 21 years, Margaret Hyatt Tycer Leggette; he was a cherished uncle to his loving nephews 22 Richard Alton Leggette and his wife Cathy, Doug Core and his wife Vickie, and Greg Core 23 and his wife Dawn; and numerous great nephews, nieces, and relatives; and 24 WHEREAS, Alton Leggette was a man of great strength and intellect, a caring 25 individual who has left his mark in Livingston Parish and the state of Louisiana; and 26 WHEREAS, the success of the state of Louisiana, the strength of our communities, 27 and the overall vitality of American society depend in great measure upon role models like 28 Alton Leggette who mold our future generations into responsible young men and women. 29 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 30 express its sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the passing of a true gentlemen and Page 2 of 3 SCR NO. 48 SLS 15RS-581 ORIGINAL 1 renowned coach, Norman Alton Leggette. 2 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 3 celebrate his extraordinary life and commend the rich legacy that Alton Leggette leaves to 4 the benefit of future generations and acknowledge a life well-spent in the service of his 5 community, his state, his country, and his God. 6 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to his 7 wife, Hyatt Leggette.
