SLS 15RS-90 ORIGINAL 2015 Regular Session SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 74 BY SENATOR LONG COMMENDATIONS. Commends Otis Washington on being named to the 2015 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class. 1 A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION 2 To commend Otis Washington on being named to the 2015 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame 3 Induction Class. 4 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in Natchitoches, Louisiana, each year 5 collaborates with the Louisiana Sports Writers Association in selecting a number of sports 6 figures who embody the character, skills, and talents worthy of being named to the hall of 7 fame; and 8 WHEREAS, the 2015 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Class includes New 9 Orleans native Otis Washington; and 10 WHEREAS, Mr. Washington holds a master's degree from Tulane University, but 11 began his own football career as an undergraduate at Xavier University, where he was an all- 12 conference guard and an all-conference baseball player; and 13 WHEREAS, he became the head coach of St. Augustine High School in 1969, and 14 ended his eleven year career there with a 106-26-1 winning record; and 15 WHEREAS, he was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Coach of the 16 Year in 1972; and 17 WHEREAS, under his leadership, the St. Augustine High School Purple Knights 18 were a Class 4A championship team for three years, were runner-up at the state Page 1 of 2 SCR NO. 74 SLS 15RS-90 ORIGINAL 1 championship in 1971, and won district titles in 1970, 1971, 1973, 1975, 1977, 1978, and 2 1979; and 3 WHEREAS, as a testament to his great leadership and ability to cultivate the talent 4 of his team members, over one hundred and twenty of his former students received college 5 scholarships; and 6 WHEREAS, he continued his distinguished career as a defensive line coach at 7 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1980, and after a 8 year at LSU, was named head coach of the Southern University and Agricultural and 9 Mechanical College Jaguars, where he lead the team to numerous victories, including the 10 fifty to twenty victory over Grambling State University at the 1982 Bayou Classic; and 11 WHEREAS, the long and stellar career of Otis Washington has earned him a place 12 among the many greats in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. 13 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby 14 commend and congratulate Otis Washington for being named to the 2015 Louisiana Sports 15 Hall of Fame Induction Class. 16 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Otis 17 Washington.
