SENATE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 90
BY SENATORS MORRELL AND APPEL AND REPRESENTATIVES ABRAMSON,
LEGER AND MORENO 
COMMENDATIONS.  Commends Brad Richard as the recipient of the 2015 Louisiana
Culture Award for Artist of the Year.
1	A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
2 To commend distinguished and published author, teacher, and artist Brad Richard as the
3 recipient of the 2015 Louisiana Culture Award for Artist of the Year.
4 WHEREAS, Mr. Richard's contributions range from local to national, creating and
5 developing artist outlets and organizations to share the art of writing in many different
6 forms; and
7 WHEREAS, Mr. Richard is a department chair at Lusher Charter School where he
8 founded, developed, and taught creative writing to students in sixth through twelfth grade
9 for nine years; and
10 WHEREAS, Mr. Richard also teaches at Kenyon College Summer Workshop for
11 teachers, New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, and Washington University in St. Louis; and
12 WHEREAS, at Lusher, Mr. Richard's dedication to his students is evident by the
13 numerous awards and scholarships his students have received; and
14 WHEREAS, Mr. Richard founded street, Lusher's high school literary journal, which
15 was awarded the highest award by the 2014 National Council of Teachers of English
16 Program to recognize excellence in student literary magazines; and
17 WHEREAS, Mr. Richard is a published author of three books: Butcher's Sugar
18 (Sibling Rivalry Press, 2012), Motion Studies (The Word Works, 2011), and Habitations

1 (Portal Press, New Orleans, 2000), which was the 2010 Washington Prize; and
2 WHEREAS, his works appear in numerous major literary journals such as the
3 American Letters & Commentary, Barrow Street, Bayou, Gettysburg Review, Guernica,
4 Hayden's Ferry Review, The Hollins Critic, Hunger Mountain, Iowa Review, Literary
5 Imagination, Mississippi Review, North American Review, Passages North, Prairie
6 Schooner, Western Humanities Review, and Witness; and
7 WHEREAS, in 2014, Mr. Richard co-curated The Waves Reading Series and
8 continues to do so today; in 2010, he founded and codirected the Southeast Louisiana
9 Writing Region's Scholastic Art & Writing Awards and continues to do so today; in 2007,
10 he founded and codirected the New Orleans New Writers Literary Festival, a literary festival
11 for high school students in the New Orleans region and continues to do so today; and
12 WHEREAS, Mr. Richard embodies all of the finest characteristics of an artist and
13 an educator; he is open and engaging and his positive affect on his many students shall not
14 be forgotten.
15 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
16 commend distinguished and published author, teacher, and artist Brad Richard as the
17 recipient of the 2015 Louisiana Culture Award for Artist of the Year and recognizes his
18 inspiring dedication to the education of the youth of Louisiana.
19 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Mr.
20 Brad Richard.
