Requests study of the impact of and penalties for texting or using social media while driving in Louisiana. 1 A CONCURRENT STUDY REQUEST 2 To request the Senate Committee on Transportation, Highways, and Public Works and the 3 House Committee on Transportation, Highways, and Public Works to meet and 4 function as a joint committee to study the impact of and penalties for texting or using 5 social media while driving in Louisiana. 6 WHEREAS, recognizing the safety hazards associated with driving while using 7 wireless communication devices, the Louisiana Legislature enacted R.S. 32:300.5, 300.6, 8 300.7, and 300.8, all of which prohibit or restrict the use of wireless communication devices 9 while operating a motor vehicle; and 10 WHEREAS, despite certain statutory restrictions, Louisiana drivers continue to use 11 wireless communication devices while operating a motor vehicle; and 12 WHEREAS, in Louisiana and nationally, accidents resulting from distracted drivers 13 are increasing; and 14 WHEREAS, existing fines and penalties do not appear to deter use of wireless 15 communication devices while driving. 16 THEREFORE, the Legislature of Louisiana requests that the Senate Committee on 17 Transportation, Highways, and Public Works and the House Committee on Transportation, 18 Highways, and Public Works to meet and function as a joint committee to study the impact Page 1 of 2 SCSR NO. 1 SLS 15RS-580 ORIGINAL 1 of and penalties for texting or using social media while driving. 2 A copy of this Study Request shall be transmitted to deputy secretary of the 3 Department of Public Safety and Corrections.
