SLS 15RS-1754 ORIGINAL 2015 Regular Session SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 119 BY SENATOR PETERSON COMMENDATIONS. Recognizes Tuesday, May 19, 2015, as the 31st Annual Red and White Day at the Louisiana Legislature. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To recognize Tuesday, May 19, 2015, as the thirty-first Annual Red and White Day at the 3 Louisiana Legislature. 4 WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated 5 on one hundred and two years of service and outstanding achievements in the community, 6 the state, and the world; and 7 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Social Action Committee of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, 8 Incorporated would like to acknowledge the vision of Red and White Day at the Louisiana 9 Legislature that began in 1985 and has resulted in Red and White Day growing from a 10 Louisiana tradition to one observed by many of the sorority's, more than one thousand 11 chapters throughout the country, and held annually at the Nation's Capital in Washington, 12 D.C.; and 13 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded on January 13, 1913, by 14 twenty-two collegiate women at Howard University who were eager to use their collective 15 strength to promote academic excellence; and 16 WHEREAS, they organized to provide scholarships and support to those in need, to 17 educate and stimulate participation in the establishment of positive public policy, to 18 highlight issues, and find solutions to problems in their communities; and Page 1 of 3 SR NO. 119 SLS 15RS-1754 ORIGINAL 1 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority celebrates its centennial anniversary of 2 exercising its collective strength to promote academic excellence and to provide assistance 3 to the community; and 4 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was incorporated in 1930 and is a private, 5 nonprofit organization that provides assistance and support through established programs 6 in local communities and throughout the world; and 7 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is the largest African-American Greek letter 8 sorority, a sisterhood of more than two hundred thousand predominately African-American 9 college educated women; and 10 WHEREAS, it is comprised of over nine hundred chapters located in the United 11 States, England, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Haiti, 12 the Bahamas, and the Republic of Korea; and 13 WHEREAS, the members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority stand on the shoulders of 14 giants, such as Senator Diana E. Bajoie, Representative Renee Gill Pratt, Representative 15 Pinkie Carolyn Wilkerson, Representative Rosalind Peychaud, Representative Jalila 16 Jefferson Bullock, Senator Cheryl Gray Evans, and Senator Karen Carter Peterson who have 17 left an incredible imprint on this state's history; and 18 WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority uses its Five-Point Program Thrust of 19 Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and 20 Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement to 21 uplift, encourage, and develop the global community; and 22 WHEREAS, the organizational structure and governance of Delta Sigma Theta 23 Sorority, is invested in the Grand Chapter, which meets at a national convention biennially, 24 and regional conferences are held in the seven geographic regions of the organization during 25 nonconvention years; and 26 WHEREAS, the success of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority's public service programs 27 have depended upon their commitment to community service and academic achievement as 28 well as their quest for excellence in all endeavors in their lives. 29 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 30 does hereby recognize Tuesday, May 19, 2015, as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Page 2 of 3 SR NO. 119 SLS 15RS-1754 ORIGINAL 1 Incorporated's Red and White Day at the Louisiana Legislature, does hereby commend the 2 women of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, for their exceptional achievements and 3 manifold contributions, and does hereby extend enduring appreciation to the organization 4 and its members for the tremendous honor and pride that they bring to their local 5 communities, the state of Louisiana, and the United States of America. 6 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the 7 president of the Grand Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, and to the 8 regional director for the Southwest Region of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
