Commends Ms. Irma Lloyd Brown on her 90th birthday. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To commend and congratulate Ms. Irma Lloyd Brown on her 90th birthday. 3 WHEREAS, Ms. Brown was born on June 6, 1925, in Torvin, Louisiana, in 4 Livingston Parish; and 5 WHEREAS, she received her education at Louisiana schools including Scott Street 6 School, Mckinley High School, Leland College, and Southern University; and 7 WHEREAS, she became an educator and teacher for thirty-two years at Dawson 8 High School and St. Francisville High School where she taught English and coached girls 9 basketball; and 10 WHEREAS, Ms. Brown is a woman of strong faith and has worshiped as a member 11 of Donaldson Chapel Baptist Church for eighty years and served as the announcement clerk 12 for seventy years; and 13 WHEREAS, Ms. Brown has lead a very proactive life and continues to participate 14 in civic organizations while making a lasting impression on her community; and 15 WHEREAS, she is a member of the Leland College Alumni Association, a founding 16 board member of Shiloh Baptist Church Credit Union, and one of the first African 17 Americans to register to vote in East Baton Rouge Parish in 1944; and 18 WHEREAS, her parents never had the opportunity to exercise this fundamental right Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 166 SLS 15RS-2738 ORIGINAL 1 so after the Supreme Court declared that blacks shall have the right to register to vote she, 2 along with a few of her friends, were among the first African Americans to register; and 3 WHEREAS, to this day, she has not missed one election since she obtained the right 4 to vote and makes it her personal business to ensure that others around her exercise their 5 right; and 6 WHEREAS, Ms. Brown is full of spunk and still leads a very active life by working 7 out three times a week, swimming, collecting clocks, and cooking three hot meals everyday; 8 and 9 WHEREAS, she also enjoys traveling and always has a bag packed and ready to take 10 the next trip; and 11 WHEREAS, the love of her life was the late Emile J. Brown and although she never 12 biologically bore children she has been a surrogate mother to countless children who love 13 her more than words can express. 14 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 15 does hereby commend and congratulate Ms. Irma Lloyd Brown on her 90th birthday and on 16 the many lives she has touched across the state. 17 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Ms. 18 Irma Lloyd Brown.
