SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 169

ROADS/HIGHWAYS.  Requests study of the sixty-five miles per hour speed limit on
portions of LA 12 and LA 27.
1	A RESOLUTION
2 To urge and request the Senate Committee on Transportation, Highways, and Public Works
3 and the Department of Transportation and Development to study establishing a speed
4 limit of sixty-five miles per hour on certain portions of Louisiana Highway 12 and
5 Louisiana Highway 27.
6 WHEREAS, the speed limit on Louisiana Highway 12 between the city of DeQuincy
7 and the town of Vinton and on Louisiana Highway 27 between the city of DeRidder and the
8 city of DeQuincy and between the city of DeQuincy and the city of Sulphur is less than
9 sixty-five miles per hour; and
10 WHEREAS, R.S. 32:61 provides for a maximum fifty-five miles per hour speed limit
11 on any highway in this state, unless a lower speed limit is posted on the highway, except that
12 the maximum speed limit on interstate and controlled access highways shall not exceed
13 seventy miles per hour, that the maximum speed limit on multi-lane divided highways shall
14 not exceed sixty-five miles per hour, and that the department may establish speed limits in
15 excess of statutory maximum speed limits as provided in R.S. 32:63(C); and
16 WHEREAS, the Department of Transportation and Development may determine and
17 declare a speed limit in excess of any maximum speed limit established by law whenever the
18 department determines on the basis of an engineering and traffic investigation that such

1 speed is reasonable and safe.
2 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
3 does hereby urge and request the Senate Committee on Transportation, Highways, and
4 Public Works and the Department of Transportation and Development to study establishing
5 a speed limit of sixty-five miles per hour on certain portions of Louisiana Highway 12 and
6 Louisiana Highway 27.
7 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
8 secretary of the Department of Transportation and Development.
