Commends the Volunteer Louisiana Commission for its support of national service and volunteerism in Louisiana. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To commend the Volunteer Louisiana Commission for its support of national service and 3 volunteerism in Louisiana. 4 WHEREAS, service to others is a hallmark of the American character, and central 5 to how we meet our challenges; and 6 WHEREAS, for more than twenty years, the Volunteer Louisiana Commission in the 7 office of the lieutenant governor has promoted and encouraged national service and 8 volunteerism as a cost-effective strategy to meet critical community needs; and 9 WHEREAS, Volunteer Louisiana invests in our communities and our citizens by 10 strengthening education, fighting poverty, rebuilding after disasters, providing health 11 services, preserving the environment, and supporting veterans and military families; and 12 WHEREAS, since its inception, Volunteer Louisiana has invested more than 63 13 million federal dollars which has been matched locally with more than 48 million dollars to 14 deploy 21,626 AmeriCorps members in 54 programs serving 8,640,725 hours to meet 15 community needs; and 16 WHEREAS, forty-seven percent of all Louisiana citizens are now engaged in service 17 to their communities; and 18 WHEREAS, both Volunteer Louisiana and AmeriCorps merit a special measure of Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 17 SLS 15RS-613 ORIGINAL 1 commendation for their tradition of service. 2 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 3 does hereby commend the Volunteer Louisiana Commission for its legacy of service, does 4 hereby recognize and record for posterity the tremendous pride and honor that the 5 commission brings to the state of Louisiana, and does hereby extend best wishes for years 6 to come. 7 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to 8 Lieutenant Governor Jay Dardenne and to the chair of the Volunteer Louisiana Commission.
