SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 173
BY SENATOR WALSWORTH 
LAW ENFORCEMENT.  Requests the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the office
of state police determine the benefits that are now provided for enforcement agents and
troopers injured or killed during the commission of their respective duties.
1	A RESOLUTION
2 To urge and request that the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the office of state
3 police determine the benefits that are provided for enforcement agents and troopers
4 injured or killed during the commission of their respective duties and report those
5 findings to the Senate Committee on Judiciary C.
6 WHEREAS, Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents and the office
7 of state police troopers are currently eligible for death and disability benefits if the injury or
8 death occurred during the performance of their duties; and
9 WHEREAS, wildlife enforcement agents and state police troopers perform duties
10 that are dangerous in nature and subject those law enforcement officers to hazardous work
11 conditions; and
12 WHEREAS, the Senate is aware of the above mentioned circumstances and
13 understands that because of the changing nature of conditions that law enforcement officers
14 face while working requires that a review be made of the benefits now provided; and
15 WHEREAS, other states currently provide varying benefits to law enforcement
16 officers and their families when the officer is injured or killed in the line of duty; and
17 WHEREAS, Louisiana always has been concerned about what happens to a law
18 enforcement officer's family when the officer is killed or injured while in the process of

1 performing the dangerous, complex, and split-second decisions that are now required in
2 combating crime; and
3 WHEREAS, the citizens of Louisiana have repeatedly shown that they want to
4 provide the best benefits for their law enforcement officers and lead other states around the
5 nation in providing benefits for those officers that will make a real difference should the
6 officer become disabled or die in the line of duty.
7 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
8 does hereby urge and request that the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the office
9 of the state police review current death and disability benefits provided to their law
10 enforcement personnel and report their findings to the Senate Committee on Judiciary C no
11 later that December 31, 2015, in order to address any death and disability benefit concerns
12 that might arise.
13 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
14 secretary of the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the deputy secretary for Public
15 Safety Services.
