2015 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 173 BY SENATOR WALSWORTH A RESOLUTION To urge and request that the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the office of state police determine the benefits that are provided for enforcement agents and troopers injured or killed during the commission of their respective duties and report those findings to the Senate Committee on Judiciary C. WHEREAS, Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents and the office of state police troopers are currently eligible for death and disability benefits if the injury or death occurred during the performance of their duties; and WHEREAS, wildlife enforcement agents and state police troopers perform duties that are dangerous in nature and subject those law enforcement officers to hazardous work conditions; and WHEREAS, the Senate is aware of the above mentioned circumstances and understands that because of the changing nature of conditions that law enforcement officers face while working requires that a review be made of the benefits now provided; and WHEREAS, other states currently provide varying benefits to law enforcement officers and their families when the officer is injured or killed in the line of duty; and WHEREAS, Louisiana always has been concerned about what happens to a law enforcement officer's family when the officer is killed or injured while in the process of performing the dangerous, complex, and split-second decisions that are now required in combating crime; and WHEREAS, the citizens of Louisiana have repeatedly shown that they want to provide the best benefits for their law enforcement officers and lead other states around the nation in providing benefits for those officers that will make a real difference should the officer become disabled or die in the line of duty. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby urge and request that the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the office of the state police review current death and disability benefits provided to their law enforcement personnel and report their findings to the Senate Committee on Judiciary C no Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 173 ENROLLED later than December 31, 2015, in order to address any death and disability benefit concerns that might arise.
