SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 174
BY SENATOR MORRISH 
COMMENDATIONS.  Recognizes and commends the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers for two hundred forty years of service.
1	A RESOLUTION
2 To commend the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for two hundred forty
3 years of steadfast, determined, and courageous service.
4 WHEREAS, the United States Army and the United States Army Corps of Engineers
5 were formed by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1775, and June 16, 1775, respectively,
6 and for the ensuing two hundred forty years both have served the United States of America
7 with great courage and distinction; and
8 WHEREAS, both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have
9 evolved greatly during their long and glorious existence, and both have adapted greatly in
10 order to always accomplish their missions and serve this nation faithfully; and
11 WHEREAS, the U.S. Army is the largest branch of the Armed Forces of the United
12 States that performs land-based military operations, and it has preserved the peace and
13 security of this nation from its birth and defended it in perilous times; and
14 WHEREAS, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is a U.S. federal agency under the
15 Department of Defense and a major Army command made up of over thirty-seven thousand
16 civilian and military personnel; and
17 WHEREAS, the U.S. Army has remained a strong protector of this country, serving
18 bravely, and never questioning its civilian oversight as it fought many times in conflicts such

1 as the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the
2 Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Global War On Terror; and
3 WHEREAS, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has played a major role in all of
4 America's wartime struggles, but the Corps also became a leader in national flood control
5 projects, a major provider of hydroelectric energy, and the major first responder to domestic
6 natural disasters; and
7 WHEREAS, the U.S. Army is currently composed of the regular Army, the Army
8 Reserve, and the Army National Guard, and with the adoption of the total force policy,
9 reserve component soldiers have taken a more active role in U.S. military operations in the
10 Gulf War, Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Iraq; and
11 WHEREAS, the Corps of Engineers teams with the U.S. Army to support American
12 forces in heavy combat areas with forward engineer support teams working in frontline
13 positions with infantry and combat engineers; and
14 WHEREAS, the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have served this
15 nation gallantly, on foreign shores and in the homeland, always placing the needs of the
16 country and its people before their own.
17 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
18 does hereby extend its highest commendations for and sincerest congratulations to the U.S.
19 Army and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for their glorious accomplishments and
20 successes during a storied two hundred forty year history.
21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
22 chief of engineers and commanding general of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the
23 secretary of the U.S. Army.
