SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 204
BY SENATORS WARD AND BROOME 
CONDOLENCES.  Expresses sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Dr.
Elisabeth (Lisi) L. Oliver.
1	A RESOLUTION
2 To express the sincere condolences of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the
3 death of Dr. Elisabeth L. Oliver.
4 WHEREAS, Dr. Elisabeth "Lisi" L. Oliver was affectionately called "Lisi" by all
5 who knew and loved her; and
6 WHEREAS, she was considered to be a keystone member of Louisiana State
7 University's English linguistics faculty; and
8 WHEREAS, Dr. Oliver taught undergraduate and graduate courses in the history of
9 the English language, linguistics, Old English Literature, and Middle English Literature,
10 among other courses; and
11 WHEREAS, a fellow LSU English professor and a graduate student remembered Dr.
12 Oliver as a beloved scholar, musician, and avid cyclist; and
13 WHEREAS, she was preparing for an annual cycling trip to France prior to her
14 passing; and
15 WHEREAS, on Sunday, June 7, 2015, Dr. Oliver was fatally struck while walking
16 along a road after bicycling; and
17 WHEREAS, Dr. Oliver had cycled all over the country and internationally; and
18 WHEREAS, Dr. Oliver will be greatly missed and always will be cherished by her

1 co-workers and the many students she has taught; and
2 WHEREAS, she was a vital and visible figure in Medieval Studies in the United
3 States and Europe, who was graced with the most distinguished scholarly academic award
4 given by the LSU academic community, Distinguished Research Master, and was a core
5 faculty member, serving as Director of the Interdepartmental Program in Linguistics at LSU;
6 and
7 WHEREAS, Dr. Oliver received her bachelor degree at Smith College and her
8 doctorate at Harvard University, where she taught for a year prior to joining the LSU faculty;
9 and
10 WHEREAS, during her tenure at LSU she received numerous awards and honors
11 including grants to support student research travel to Kalamazoo, London, and other places;
12 and 
13 WHEREAS, she was extremely influential in the lives of her students and many of
14 them refer to her as their adoptive mother; and
15 WHEREAS, it is appropriate to mourn the loss and remember to celebrate the life
16 and legacy of Dr. Elisabeth "Lisi" L. Oliver.
17 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
18 does hereby express the sincere condolences of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
19 upon the death of Dr. Elisabeth "Lisi" L. Oliver.
20 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
21 family of Dr. Elisabeth "Lisi" L. Oliver.
