SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 204
BY SENATORS WARD AND BROOME 
A RESOLUTION
To express the sincere condolences of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the
death of Dr. Elisabeth L. Oliver.
WHEREAS, Dr. Elisabeth "Lisi" L. Oliver was affectionately called "Lisi" by all
who knew and loved her; and
WHEREAS, she was considered to be a keystone member of Louisiana State
University's English linguistics faculty; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Oliver taught undergraduate and graduate courses in the history of
the English language, linguistics, Old English Literature, and Middle English Literature,
among other courses; and
WHEREAS, a fellow LSU English professor and a graduate student remembered Dr.
Oliver as a beloved scholar, musician, and avid cyclist; and
WHEREAS, she was preparing for an annual cycling trip to France prior to her
passing; and
WHEREAS, on Sunday, June 7, 2015, Dr. Oliver was fatally struck while walking
along a road after bicycling; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Oliver had cycled all over the country and internationally; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Oliver will be greatly missed and always will be cherished by her
co-workers and the many students she has taught; and
WHEREAS, she was a vital and visible figure in Medieval Studies in the United
States and Europe, who was graced with the most distinguished scholarly academic award
given by the LSU academic community, Distinguished Research Master, and was a core
faculty member, serving as Director of the Interdepartmental Program in Linguistics at LSU;
and
WHEREAS, Dr. Oliver received her bachelor degree at Smith College and her
doctorate at Harvard University, where she taught for a year prior to joining the LSU faculty;
and

WHEREAS, during her tenure at LSU she received numerous awards and honors
including grants to support student research travel to Kalamazoo, London, and other places;
and 
WHEREAS, she was extremely influential in the lives of her students and many of
them refer to her as their adoptive mother; and
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to mourn the loss and remember to celebrate the life
and legacy of Dr. Elisabeth "Lisi" L. Oliver.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby express the sincere condolences of the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
upon the death of Dr. Elisabeth "Lisi" L. Oliver.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
family of Dr. Elisabeth "Lisi" L. Oliver.
