Provides relative to selection of the officers of the Senate. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To amend and readopt Senate Rule 3.2(A) of the Rules of Order of the Senate and to adopt 3 Senate Rule 3.1.1 of the Rules of Order of the Senate relative to the selection of the 4 officers of the Senate; to provide for nomination of officers by secret ballot prior to 5 election and to provide for the time of nomination and election. 6 BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana amends and 7 readopts Senate Rule 3.2(A) and adopts Senate Rule 3.1.1 of the Rules of Order of the 8 Senate to read as follows: 9 Rule 3.1.1. Nomination of officers; selection procedure 10 A. Immediately after the members take the oath of office on the second 11 Monday in January, after their election every four years, the members of the 12 Senate shall nominate for selection, by secret ballot, and in the order named, 13 a President, President Pro Tempore, Secretary and Sergeant At Arms. A 14 nominee for each office shall be selected and nominated by a majority vote of 15 the members elected. 16 B. DIGEST SR 215 Original 2015 Regular Session LaFleur Present rule provides that the officers of the Senate shall be elected immediately after the members of the Senate take the oath of office in January after the members have been elected every four years. Provides that the election shall be by the affirmative vote of at least 20 members and that the vote shall be viva voce. Proposed rule retains present rule but provides that immediately after taking the oath of office, the members shall nominate for selection the officers of the Senate by secret ballot. Specifies the order of nomination and specifies that a nominee for each office shall be nominated and selected by a majority vote of the members elected. Proposed rule provides that if there are more than two candidates nominated for selection for an office and if after balloting no candidate receives a majority vote for nomination to an office, a second ballot shall be cast between the two candidates receiving the highest number of votes for selection and nomination for office. Provides that upon the selection of one nominee for each office, the election of the officers shall occur as provided in present rules.
