SLS 15RS-3892 ORIGINAL 2015 Regular Session SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 223 BY SENATOR CLAITOR COMMENDATIONS. Commends the University High School football team on winning the 2014 Division II State Championship and congratulates the Cubs on an exceptional season. 1 A RESOLUTION 2 To commend the Louisiana State University Laboratory School football team upon winning 3 the 2014 Division II State Championship in Louisiana High School Athletic 4 Association competition and to congratulate the team and coaches on an exceptional 5 season. 6 WHEREAS, on December 5, 2014, the U High Cubs earned the title of Division II 7 State Champions after defeating Parkview Baptist by a score of 46-32 in the Allstate Sugar 8 Bowl/LHSAA State Championships at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans; and 9 WHEREAS, the championship win, a culmination of a remarkable journey for the 10 Cubs, was the third in school history and the first football title claimed by U High since 11 1988, long before any players on this year's roster were born; and 12 WHEREAS, this thrilling victory capped one of U High's finest seasons with the 13 team posting a perfect record of 13 wins and 0 losses and capturing the District 3A 14 championship along the way; and 15 WHEREAS, in capturing the title, the 2014 U High Cubs displayed the courage, 16 determination, fortitude, and desire of every championship team, while always adhering to 17 the finest principles of good sportsmanship; and 18 WHEREAS, under the tutelage of Head Coach Chad Mahaffey who was skillfully Page 1 of 3 SR NO. 223 SLS 15RS-3892 ORIGINAL 1 assisted by Associate Coach Andy Martin and the other capable members of the coaching 2 staff, Burke Broussard, Nick Glueck, Blake Hollingsworth, Miles Landry, Michael Kennedy, 3 David Neubauer, James Piker, and Joe Womack, the team was propelled to lofty heights; and 4 WHEREAS, by providing the leadership and motivational skills necessary to produce 5 a winning spirit and instilling confidence in each individual, the coaching staff molded these 6 talented athletes into a championship-caliber team; and 7 WHEREAS, from the first team meeting until the final moment of play, the Cubs 8 lived, both on and off the field, by their mantra, "One Team, One Heartbeat", using it as the 9 catalyst to become one cohesive unit; and 10 WHEREAS, never losing sight of their dream of winning the state football title, these 11 student athletes performed to their highest potential throughout the regular season and the 12 playoffs, and each member of the squad deserves special recognition for his contribution to 13 that triumphant effort and to the success of the LSU Lab School football program; and 25 WHEREAS, the eleven seniors on this team merit the highest measure of praise as 26 they concluded their high school football careers having won four consecutive district 27 championships and having compiled a stellar win-loss record of 50-4, making them the 28 winningest class in the near one-hundred-year history of U High; and 29 WHEREAS, it is altogether fitting that these extraordinary young men are recognized 30 for their outstanding accomplishments; each of these well-deserved accolades and awards Page 2 of 3 SR NO. 223 SLS 15RS-3892 ORIGINAL 1 were earned through the finest expression of teamwork, tenacity, and dedication to the sport 2 of football and to each other. 3 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana 4 does hereby commend and congratulate the LSU University High football team on winning 5 the LHSAA Division II State Football Championship and does hereby recognize the 6 tremendous sense of honor and pride the team has brought to the school, its alumni, and 7 community. 8 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does 9 hereby extend best wishes to the players, coaches, and staff involved with this outstanding 10 football program as they celebrate an exceptional season and prepare for continued success 11 in the future. 12 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be transmitted to school 13 officials, Wade Smith, Superintendent of the LSU Laboratory School; Albert Camburn, 14 principal; Jill White, athletic director; and Chad Mahaffey, head football coach.
