SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 23

COMMENDATIONS. Honors and recognizes Laurita Pete, past president of the Crowley
City Council, on her contributions to Acadia Parish and the state of Louisiana.
1 A RESOLUTION
2 To honor and recognize Laurita Pete, past president of the Crowley City Council, on her
3 contributions to Acadia Parish and the state of Louisiana.
4 WHEREAS, Laurita Pete is regarded by many as "one of the best to have ever served
5 in elected office in Louisiana"; and
6 WHEREAS, she never retreated from important issues and always made fearless
7 decisions in the best interest of her constituents; and
8 WHEREAS, she was the first African-American female to serve on the Crowley City
9 Council and was named an honorary senator by the Louisiana State Senate; and
10 WHEREAS, she was the first certified African-American within the Department of
11 Public Welfare as a caseworker; and
12 WHEREAS, she was honored by the National Association of University Women as
13 the local Woman of the Year; and
14 WHEREAS, the Louisiana Children's Defense Fund recognized her as a Champion
15 for Children; and
16 WHEREAS, her colleagues have said, "Pete was a true historian and could remember
17 any and everything"; and
18 WHEREAS, her successor acknowledged that she has very large shoes to fill and

1 very fond memories of the dedicated service rendered by Laurita Pete; and
2 WHEREAS, words and phrases such as "devoted", "informed", "hardworking", "a
3 giving spirit", "a joy to work with", and "tireless public servant" are often used to describe
4 Laurita Pete; and
5 WHEREAS, the impression that she left on the Crowley City Council will be felt for
6 many years to come.
7 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
8 does hereby honor and recognize Laurita Pete, past president of the Crowley City Council,
9 on her contributions to Acadia Parish and the state of Louisiana.
10 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
11 Laurita Pete.
