2015 Regular Session ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 23 BY SENATORS PETERSON AND MORRI SH A RESOLUTION To honor and recognize Laurita Pete, past president of the Crowley City Council, on her contributions to Acadia Parish and the state of Louisiana. WHEREAS, Laurita Pete is regarded by many as "one of the best to have ever served in elected office in Louisiana"; and WHEREAS, she never retreated from important issues and always made fearless decisions in the best interest of her constituents; and WHEREAS, she was the first African-American female to serve on the Crowley City Council and was named an honorary senator by the Louisiana State Senate; and WHEREAS, she was the first certified African American within the Department of Public Welfare as a caseworker; and WHEREAS, she was honored by the National Association of University Women as the local Woman of the Year; and WHEREAS, the Louisiana Children's Defense Fund recognized her as a Champion for Children; and WHEREAS, her colleagues have said, "Pete was a true historian and could remember any and everything"; and WHEREAS, her successor acknowledged that she has very large shoes to fill and very fond memories of the dedicated service rendered by Laurita Pete; and WHEREAS, words and phrases such as "devoted", "informed", "hardworking", "a giving spirit", "a joy to work with", and "tireless public servant" are often used to describe Laurita Pete; and WHEREAS, the impression that she left on the Crowley City Council will be felt for many years to come. Page 1 of 2 SR NO. 23 ENROLLED THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby honor and recognize Laurita Pete, past president of the Crowley City Council, on her contributions to Acadia Parish and the state of Louisiana.
